my memorex flash drive has suddenly started causing my pc to "dump physical memory" and reboot. It has not happened before. what could cause this? I'm using XP

Faulty Drive is a possibility. Memory dumping could be caused by a faulting USB driver. It could also be the auto-run function in XP that is faulting, causing the memory dump. Does it happen with any other flash drives. If it happens with all drives, not your drive. What happens if you try in a different USB port?

as far as i know it does not happen with other flash drives. When i inser this particular one in my laptop (also xp) there's no problem. it only happens on my desktop with this flashdrive..
same thing happens in a different port.
how do i repair the driver just in case it is the driver?

I don't know if it is the driver. Does Windows normally try to pop up Explorer showing the content of the drive. You can turn off that feature, can't remember where, but Google should help. Driver shouldn't really be a problem, as it is a standard XP driver. And if it doesn't happen with other drives, then 99% sure it won't be driver. Does the machine blue screen, or just dump. If it just dumps, open Device Manager and fiddle there, with the drivers. Else, I'm actually not really sure what this could be.

yip the blue screen comes up and it counts from 0%to 100%. the explorer window does not pop up

?????????????

Blue screen comes up, and counts from 0%-100%. Don't understand. When I insert a flash drive, nothing pop's up with numbers. Could you possibly grab a screen shot as it is going through this and PM it to me? Would be interesting to see this. It sounds like you have some arb program assigned to the autorun function of the USB device. Or it has some program on the drive that it is auto running. Do you know what is on the disk?

think that's the BSOD he's talking about, and the 0-100% would be the progress of the memory dump...

I can't take a screenshot as everything is dsiabled while the dump is in progress.
disk contents: some nzb's, word docs, pdf's

huh?? sorry but i have noooo idea what u talking about

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> System

Have a look at what the logs say.

It's a long shot but have you tried reformatting the drive in your laptop and then try it again in your pc?

ok will try on monday on my laptop again...thanx guys

event viewer shows nothing for the time that the blue screen comes up. however the following appears on the blue screen:

"DRIVER_IRQL_NOT LESS OR EQUAL" ???
