After almost every weekend when telkom system is 'congensted/pathetic/slow/radius failures' today the final straw on the camels back is now! This camel is getting up and going elsewere. I got all the kit from telkom 'cos there was a 'central' point to call in case of problems.... NOT. been on ADSL512 for 2 years and never have has crap until the 384/192 packages were introduced..... they charge downgrage fees, I wonder if they charge 'REMOVE THE S**T NOW' fees

IBurst is getting my phone call tomorrow..

Richard

well i have both adsl 512 and iburst and the only thing better with adsl is the 30gb cap. if iburst had decent caps then bye bye adsl.

My gripe is -- Why does telkom ALLWAYS pick the weekends tp run maintainance!..
I was offline for a week (whole of last week) 'cos 'someone forgot to reconnect your line after they changed the cables at the street pole'.

IBurst service have improved a lot. The past month has been great. It also seems with the UUNET peering link upgrade network speed has increased as well. Can anyone else confirm the same?

Well....can't comment to much on speed since my speed has been good most of the time. I can say that last month was great stability wise.

UPDATE : Got iBurst... installed, the DHCP assigned DNS addresses are wrong, the timing to the wbs homepage is good... Skype doesnt work that great, my SIP VoIP handset doesnt work AT ALL!.. could not get a streming audio link to work from WinAMP's media list....

Didnt think it could be THAT bad... as the modem reigisters a 90% signal.

pluged ADSL back in................

Richard

dont know if I should laugh or cry ;p

but its pretty funny :)

There's good things and bad things for any connection. In SA it's just more bad things usually.

The solution however will come at 1 November 2005 for ADSL: uncapped, unshaped at R40000 per month. I personally can't wait.
/sarcasm off

I had Iburst and I'm back to ADSL. Iburst is a load of crap. The most pathetic service I've ever seen. I would rather use a dialup than Iburst. Maybe I was just unlucky.

I have been trying to cancel this since June 2004 - I eventually cancelled their debit order becuase they seem to refuse to cancel the service.

I'm glad you opened your eyes to the crappiness of iBust. That seriously was the worst time of my life. Like I say 'When conversing with the devil, speak to him (Telkom) and don't bother with the lesser minions (iBust et cetera), as you know you'll get what you want ;)'.

Personally I dont think iBurst is that poor a service - I've never had it mind you.
I think "hit or miss" is an appropriate description - if you hit, iBurst is great.

From a technology perspective, ADSL performance will always beat wireless broadband simply because of the physics involved. A terrestrial line is far less prone to interference and weather problems.

The problem with all the broadband offerings in this country though is not the actual technology, its the providers.
ADSL is crippled intentionally by Telkom by shaping, support and capping.
iBurst and Sentech is much the same.

What irritates me no end is that any of the providers could really make a great service available if they thought further ahead than the next shareholder meeting.
If these players took the long term view, they'd realise that more subscribers should be won faster, cos economies of scale is where its at.

Ever heard of lightening ?
Iburst hit or miss yes granted , pretty much the samew for ADSL if your exchange/area does not have it.
Internet & service offering in SA is also pretty much Hit or Miss at the moment. :(

I must say if I had only 90% signal I would definitely stay on ADSL, if you don't get full solid signal on iburst I don't think it's worth it. Latency is very much increased by a weak signal and distance from base station. That said....I hate Telkom but I hate WBS as well. You just have to choose what’s best for your situation. I have used skype successfully even when capped for hours with little interference. I pay R469pm and I do easilly over 13gb a month. I can also play WoW, forget FPS though.

There have also been days when I felt like kicking my UTD out the window, but I'm also sure the same can be said about some ppl on ADSL aswell. Broadband in SA is very sad.

Like other posters mentioned, iBurst really is bad because of the provider. I have it on good authority that services based on the same technology in Australia really rock.

iBurst had its days when it worked fantasic - mostly in the pre-launch phase... Heck I could use skype with crystal clear sound both ways while running a couple of torrents.

But then they had to go launch it, slap a cap on it and just generally ruin it :-(
