Was he really that good?

I've heard Older football fans say stuff like - "Steven Gerrard is the nearest thing you'll come to Duncan Edwards as a complete footballer"

and

"Oh yes, Ronaldo is a fantastic player but compared to Duncan Edwards he's well behind.

Style of play: (taken from Wikipedia)
Physically, he was enormous. He was strong and had a fantastic football brain. His ability was complete - right foot, left foot, long passing, short passing. He did everything instinctively. -

saw a documentary on MUTV a while back (had nothing better to watch :D,and i did splash myself with some holy water after watching the scum channel :D)

some of the older United fans claimed he was better than PELE himself ,remember he died when he was on 21 so no one will ever know what he would have achieved in the game

on that same Documentary The Great Bobby Charlton who is probably englands finest player said that he could not train with Duncan as he was a nervous wreck and wasnt fit to lace Duncan Edwards boots  now that is an endorsement of note.

What do you guys think ? was he that good or just Manure fans with rose tinted specs

No he wasn't. Just like Robben isn't fit to lace Maradonna's boots simply because h hardly ever plays. Luck of the draw and all that. Harsh truth, but...

My dad's name is Duncan Edwards. he was named after him as my dad was born in 1958 just after Duncan Edwards died due to the Munich disaster. My dad's parents were obviously Liverpool supporters but in those days everyone including Liverpool supporters admired Duncan Edwards as he was regarded as the best player in the world at that time even though he was only 21. He was apparently amazing beyond belief and it was a sad time in England to lose such a great footballer who would of no doubt go on to be one the best ever in the world. Unfortunately he was only 21 when he died and that potential was lost.

thats exactly the sentiment of all the older footy fans who saw Duncan Edwards play ,when i was little my Dad and grandad use to always go on about How great Duncan Edwards was ,and they were both arsenal supporters :( :D

Ive heard stories about Him playing centre back in one game when Manure was losing 2-0 Sir matt then told him to play up front with him then netting a hatrick ,apparently he was a physical specimen of note and technically gifted aswell and could play any position

almost sounds like Stevie G :D

Bollocks. If he was comparable to anyone it would be to His Greatness, Di Stefano. Could play in all positions and was amazingly talented.

Congratulate what? I never said Gerrard wasn't a great player... however, saying that he is the equal of Di Stefano is ludicrous. He bitches about playing on the wings - hell, Di Stefano could play an entire season on the wings and still be the best player in the team. Gerrard had to be moved to a supporting striker role to "utilise his full potential"... As much as I know of Duncan Edwards and Di Stefano - they didn't need a position to define them. Whereever they were... they defined the game.

slow down smokes ,I never compared Superman to Di stefano :D and fyi stevie might have complained about playing on the right but he still scored 23 goals that year and won the pfa player of the year award ;) Did you know stevie started his career under Houlier as Full back ;) the only place that he has not played for liverpool is Centre Back and goal keeper ;) :D

Well, Sir Bobby Charlton once said of Duncan Edwards "the only player that made me feel inferior". Bobby wasn't no slouch, so Dunc must've been special..
