Anyone know why duplicate packets are returned occasionally when pinging addresses? This is not reported on Windows ping results, BTW.

I had a problem once with a faulty 802.11g CardBus card for a laptop that always sent packets twice...

Methinks (but would like to actually have factual knowledge) it has something to do with the icmp seq# and somehow that causes a retransmission from the endpoint......ok I have no idea what I'm saying...

Nope, because of the way wireless works (it's not really asynchronise) you get a few packets not reporting back to the server when delivered, the server then retransmits the packet again.

i think

I've seen it in wired networks with screwed routing tables.

I suppose if your modem changes between towers the same packet may be accepted by more than one tower, thus causing a dup on the reply...

Bad routing as well as if you ping a multicast IP then you will get duplicate packet responses
