South Africa is seeking support from other African nations for Durban's bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which would bring the competition to the continent for the first time and possibly lay the groundwork for an attempt to stage the first Olympics in Africa.

South Africa's Olympic committee hosted a dinner Sunday in Botswana for representatives from 16 of Africa's Commonwealth countries to rally support behind the bid by the east coast city of Durban. Edmonton, Canada, has also announced its candidacy for the games in eight years.

Cities must lodge their bids to host the 2022 Games by March 2015. The winning candidate will be announced in September 2015.

The games are seen as a springboard for South Africa to launch a bid for the Summer Olympics, probably either in 2024 or 2028. Durban is also South Africa's preferred city for the Olympics.

Top South African Olympic officials, including International Olympic Committee executive board member Sam Ramsamy, are in Gaborone, Botswana, this week for the African Youth Games and to lobby support for Durban's bid. South Africa hopes its experience of hosting the 2010 World Cup will boost its chances of landing the Commonwealth Games and ultimately the Olympics.

"We are once again ready to invest in the hosting of a mega event," South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee chief executive Tubby Reddy said in a statement outlining the country's credentials. "To this end we have targeted the need to bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games."

Ramsamy, the former head of South Africa's first non-racial Olympic body, has said the country will "definitely" bid for an Olympics in 2024 or 2028. Cape Town previously lost out in the race to host the 2004 Olympics.

South African sports officials have targeted another attempt at the Olympics ever since the successful World Cup four years ago but say they need backing from the government before they can pursue a bid and were waiting until after national elections this month to approach the country's leadership.

Sports minister Fikile Mbalula has been a vocal supporter of an Olympic bid and was retained in President Jacob Zuma's cabinet reshuffle this weekend.

Problem with Cape Town is the weather is only really suitable from late October until April and it doesn't have/need a stadium with an athletics track. Durbs has good weather year round and already has MM.
 
The 2010 SWC left negligible ongoing benefit for our country and it's people. It left the tax payers with hefty bills and white elephant stadiums which we will still be paying or over the next 10 -20 years. The only ones who benefited were FIFA and the local politically connected.

We had 12,000 service delivery protests in SA last year, which are getting more and more violent.

This same poster when the announcement is made that some other African country wins the bid : South Africa is useless ! So and so country even got the games before us ! What a banana republic we are !

Actually probably rightly so. South Africa arguably needs these types of events to draw attention to how different we are to the rest of Africa and secure foreign investment.

No, we don't need these tax payer sponsored events to place us on the world map.

Our government is doing a sterling job at depicting our country as a banana republic, sliding into anarchy in the foreign tabloids on an almost daily basis.

No amount of sports events with pretty pictures of our geography and multi-cultural-ism will secure serious foreign investors; ... tourists maybe.

Only a stable political environment that is conducive to doing honest and untangled, union-free business with good returns will secure hard investments.

Oh please. You may think corruption here is a big story, but on a world scale we're amateurs. An third world president building a huge mansion compared to the rest of the developing world isn't even newsworthy.

Perhaps it has something to do with your nic.

The world's major ratings agencies do notice all these things, hence why many incoming foreign investment streams begun to stall and the Rand has plummeted in the last few years.
Major international investors use these agency reports as part of their due diligence checks before committing to shelling out their shareholder's investments money abroad.

What the bloody hell do they want to host this, or heaven forbid the Olympics for? The hosting country has almost never benefited after the event, and only those individuals who are connected got anything out of it! Oh wait...
 
Durban last city standing to host 2022 Commonwealth Games

Canada's Edmonton withdrawal leaves Durban as the only other city contending to host the multi-sports event in 2022.

Durban is the only city vying to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after the Canadian city of Edmonton withdrew its bid because of economic concerns in the wake of the drop in worldwide oil prices.

The decision, which comes weeks ahead of the March deadline to submit bids, leaves Durban as the only other city contending to host the multi-sports event.

Durban’s bid committee said on Wednesday that it had “noted Edmonton’s decision to withdraw from the bid process to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022. As the bid committee for the City of Durban, we are required to follow due process and lodge our bid with the Commonwealth Games Federation,” according to Eyewitness News.

Commenting on the announcement, Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive David Grevemberg said he was looking forward to realising the ambitions of Africa’s first Commonwealth Games.

“We now look forward enthusiastically to working with the Durban 2022 bid team and their partners through the evaluation process.”

“We are of course very saddened by this decision, but we know that this is the right one for the future of our city, province and country,” said Simon Farbrother, chief executive of the Edmonton bid committee.

“The Commonwealth Games have strong roots in Canada and we plan to be able to come back for the 2026 Games should the economic status allow.”

The Commonwealth Games are held every four years and feature athletes from more than 50 countries. The next event will be held on Australia’s Gold Coast in 2018.

The host city for the 2022 Commonwealth Games is scheduled to be announced in September.

Edmonton has hosted the Games before, in 1978, while Canada hosted the inaugural Games in 1930 (Hamilton), 1954 (Vancouver) and 1994 (Victoria).

According to officials, the Alberta government has seen its fiscal programme drop to a $7-billion deficit from a $500-million surplus, owing to falling oil prices, since Edmonton announced its intention to bid last year.

The bid committee said the drop in the price of oil, a major Canadian export, will have a significant impact on the economy, affecting most sectors throughout the province.

To be fair our economy probably does better with a reduced oil price whereas Edmonton, with it's reliance on oil revenue, would take a huge amount of strain.

Why? Wont they just be converting the Durban stadium so that it can host track and field events? I remember reading that Durban is ideal to host the Olympics or similar events because it has all the other facilities available already for the numerous sporting events. Or most of them anyway. Some upgrades of course would be required, but wont have to start from scratch.

True, at least it's not the loss leader that hosting the Olympics would be and we would finally get some good use out of the new stadium. My concerns would be about any new stadiums that they might need to built.
 
On the TimesLive website a figure of 10bn is been suggested as a cost for this. This is obviously before the cost over-runs, bribes and whatnot. So I would double this to 20bn.

Surely these sort of figures will not grow our economy by the same amount or larger ?

Should that money not be better spent sorting out ailing and failing infrastructure ?

Wonder if we can incorporate new disciplines, like Filling the long jump pit with water and then placing two electrical wires into it in a game of Eskom Roulette ......
