Some chaos in the CBD - another strike!

Can the Durbanites shed more light on the reason(s)?

Think this is a continuation of yesterday... Still dunno what caused it though

Looks like a normal work day to me.... confusion, destruction, refusal to work... etc.

Officials intervene after violent Durban strike

06 May 2014 at 07:16 by Shaun Ryan - EThekwini mayor James Nxumalo has called an urgent Special Executive Committee meeting to look into issues relating to the Divisional Conditions of Service among labour.

The move comes after a meeting between officials and workers turned violent at Currie's Fountain yesterday.

Workers reportedly became enraged when Nxumalo told them the matter would only be discussed next week.

Some angry workers then left their gathering point and trashed parts of the Durban CBD to demonstrate their discontent.

Roads were barricaded with rubbish and debris, affecting rush-hour traffic.

The City says negotiations have resulted in agreements on most issues adding that the only outstanding issue is the period within which to effect payment to affected employees.

The Supreme Court of Appeals last year ordered eThekwini to revert to conditions of service in place before they were changed in 2007.

The municipality says its currently in negotiations with Provincial and National Treasury and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to find a way forward.

Municipal strike, I think.
I know it relates to the municipality, what I am concerned about and wondering is that this relates to a long standing and deeply political clash that has been to Bloemfontein (where the SACP lost at ratepayers expense) and undoubtedly weighs on the provincial election

There has been a court ruling in favor of the municipal employees and the employees want their money basically .

"Employees had rejected the mayor’s promise to make a final decision only after the elections on the millions of rand in backpay owed to them."

yep the municipal employees are entitled to money and the SACP caucus has been pushing for them not to be paid
my guess is that the mayor doesn't want them to be paid until after the elections because the election results will strongly indicate who has dominance in KZN politics - if the ANC don't retain outright control of KZN then the province wont bail funds to eThekwini to clean up the SACPs mess

Shouldn't it be Samwu, what has the Sacp have to do with the municipality?
