Durban Codefest

No thanks, sounds like guava-mint wants free labor

As opposed to a tender with inflated prices? I doubt it. Good initiative I think though I would have preferred they focussed on improving the police force's systems.

Yep, so doc's can't get lost etc, electronic for all, give them ipad's or something

If it was Google's hack event they have for Chrome, then I'd say awesome. Winning team/best idea gets paid cash-monies. And even though some good might come out of it, it doesn't curb government spending a crap ton of money on useless companies producing code.

I would certainly participate in an initiative if they open-source every application in government. Not the data of course, but the apps. Then everyone (in an open source/free capacity) could suggest/write/fix code. So eNATIS won't be such a ****-up, we'd have all branches of government openly communicate with each other and even provide services to people like SAA so you know you have a person flying on board wanted by the police etc etc

Alas, government never wants to work WITH us
