Durban – The Department of Labour’s offices in Durban have been closed down after the building in central Durban was declared unsafe and unhealthy.

Makhosonke Buthelezi, speaking from Pretoria, said he was aware that the building in Masonic Grove in Durban had suffered repeated burst pipes, including sewrage leaks.

He said that a prohibition notice was served on the building by an occupational and health safety inspector.

Buthelezi said it was not clear when the building would reopen, but that its opening would depend on when the Department of Public Works addressed the problems.

Lol. The department of labour with an unsafe building. Am I the only one seeing the iron knee?

I worked at their head office in Pretoria - it was ridiculously unhygienic and really old. No professional would consider working there unless they are being paid a bundle.
Either someone is being paid ridiculous rents for using old buildings or the dept is saving a bundle by using them .. who knows - either way - it should be illegal to occupy those buildings. Stupidly they spend small amounts on constant cheap maintenance.
In 1 sense they are helping keep old areas alive by forcing the use of these ancient sites and buildings, but I don't think that helps the
country considering the productivity there becomes so low.

Hire some UKZN students to clean it up. Those guy love poo.

Dont come here with your westernized devil language. What is this word maintenance that you speak of.

Maintenance: an unpopular (but essential) procedure that means there is less money to [-]steal[/-] appropriate for tenders.

:p

The government building with no toilets or lighting

Durban - The Department of Labour closed its Durban headquarters this week after it was labelled a “health hazard”.

The Sunday Tribune reported last week that the building on Margaret Mncadi Avenue (Victoria Embankment) had no drinking water, no working toilets, faulty plumbing, lighting and air-conditioning.

On Tuesday Lungelo Mkamba, the department’s spokesperson, announced the closure was “indefinite”.

“This was after a prohibition notice served on the property, by an occupational health and safety specialist, when an inspection revealed unsafe and unhealthy conditions.

“The notice may be revoked or amended once an inspector is satisfied the building was safe and healthy for staff and clients,” said Mkamba.

He said they had a contingency plan to ensure service delivery.

Unemployment insurance fund (UIF), maternity and sick benefits, death and injured-on-duty claims and other worker-related matters were handled there.

Mkamba said staff would be deployed to other centres and satellite offices.
