I'm moving to an area in Durbanville that is marked as 'vdsl roll-out' on the map @

http://www.telkom.co.za/coverage/#Legend

Does roll-out mean sometime in the distant future or within a year ?

It's a small area in a huge complex - not sure why these few blocks are the only bit going to get vdsl, - if I'd chosen a place on the other side of the road then I would have been out of the vdsl area.

This usually means within 3 - 6 months.

However I use the word usually loosely here...

It would be really nice if you can get VDSL...
I have VDSL. I am on a 20MB line and it is blazing fast!

Here is just a few points to take notice:
*You need to upgrade your router that supports VDSL, and they are quite expensive.
*Telkom must install a new line, and I waited quite a long time.
*The first three months my internet wasn't stable, because of faulty installation.

Bottom line, I also live in Durbanville and VDSL is really the way to go if you want fast download speeds!
Good luck with Telkom!

They took 3 and a half months to install and activate our MSAN, but now that its done, no more congestion.
Speeds are great :) I have just checked, my area that has been activated, is not updated on the website yet.
Good luck

Hi.

Just wondering do they have to completely remove the standard cable and replace it for vdsl? I'm currently on a 4mbs and my exchange does have 40mbps enabled.

Also does switching to vdsl mean less congestion and maybe better latency for gaming?

Thanks

They install a brand new VDSL line at your house, but the line from the exchange to your house they don't replace.
Most definitely a big increase in online gaming. I was on a 3G mobile internet, and I am very fond about fast internet, and I lagged. I did not lag all the time, but most of the time. I played COD: AW on PS3 and my connection with a ZA Lobby was three bars. But, when I tried to play BF4... I lagged for days! I upgraded my internet from 3G to VDSL, now every game I find on AW, I host it! I can play BF4 with ease! VDSL is really the best opinion to go with, if you are serious about a stable + fast connection.

I am paying R775pm (line not included) with 50GB and unlimited night surfer. And I thought Telkom would make my line slower if the unlimited night surfer would kick in, but they did not. I downloaded a 40GB serie in approximately 7 - 8 hours! :D

Gaming for me is my top priority as I love COD: AW. I most likely will move over to vdsl.

Im guessing that between telkom coming to replace the wire that there will still be internet but just as 20mbps ADSL?
I thinking Maybe Vox Capped might be best and getting the line with them. Are you will telkom?

Sorry didn't pay attention to the Speed test saying ISP: Telkom lol

Forgot to ask...What does it cost for telkom to come out and install it all? And If i cancel the service will the line need to be replaced to the standard cable?

Thanks

Please note ADSL only supports up to a 10mb line. You need to confirm with Telkom. That is really a good question! I am not sure, you must also confirm that with Telkom. I would say go with Telkom, because every other internet supplier uses Telkom's lines, so you will always be stuck with Telkom. And I have noticed, the more expensive package you take, the more Telkom is willing to help you. I had a problem with the line, and literally two days later, they replaced the line with a new one.

Really? But why do you need to upgrade your router to VDSL? Because, you cannot use an ADSL router?

For VDSL, you need a VDSL "capable" router...like the standard ones Telkom shops are selling. Pace. You don't have a lot of settings you can fiddle with but it does the job. Then once you have your VDSL-capable router setup, make sure the modulation type (profile) is set to a VDSL profile. (there are plenty of comments on MyBB forums about this)

When my line was upgraded (about a month ago) to a 20mbps line, I had just about exactly the same speeds as you, and after about a week of struggling with my service provider to get Telkom to change my profile, it was finally done. The biggest thing you'll notice is the upload speeds goes up to almost 2mbps (I got 1.9mbps). You will also see a little better download speed, because there are less overheads on VDSL. You should be getting 18.5-19mbps download speeds.

Okay... I understand what you are saying. Before Telkom went to fix my line, my download speed was around 16mbps... After the installment, my download speed is 17mbps+! But, 18.5 - 19mbps will be A LOT better! :D

Don't no why my upload speeds is so slow compared to yours?
