DVD capacity becoming an issue for 360

I thought that was never possible! Pity FBF is gone! ;) Another falacy debunked!

Bigger titles starting to need more than 9GB

According to our source, the problem is that when you know you have all of that extra storage available on the PlayStation 3 platform, it is becoming harder to make the cuts and reductions in content necessary to pare down to only a 9GB max capacity. This is why quite a few of the recently released Xbox 360 titles are arriving on two DVDs and now sometimes require installation of the second disc to the hard drive.

Word is that Capcom is the latest to feel the pinch with its upcoming release Lost Planet 2. While the first game fit on one disc, the second game required significant cuts in order to fit within the capacity limits of the Xbox 360. According to the whispers we hear, it is still undecided if the game will be one DVD or two; but the material that was cut will likely be molded into some sort of DLC content to be released at a later date.

With no potential help for this issue on the horizon, one has to wonder how developers are going to be able to curb their creativity in order to make it fit on a 9GB disc. In the end, it is just a limitation that consumers and developers will have to live with. It could be worse, as no one ever thought that a single game could take up 9GB, let alone 15GB; and now with 50GB possible, we have to wonder who will be the first to claim they are out of space with the Blu-Ray format.

One game out of hundreds couldn't fit on a DVD, oh noes its the end of the world!!!! Or as Mass Effect 2 proved, it's irrelevant

Well its the second new releases. :eek::eek: So the question begs? if the devs will limit the game to the size restriction or just fill 5 DVD's to level the plane field. It's not what was done so far but what will the effect be in future.

I am trying hard to find the posts relating to the DVD size debates from the past, but alas it seemed the thread met its match. I am trying so hard to remember...??? ;)
 
i cant understand why everyone still sticks to optical media. why dont they just release new titles on flashdrives?

the cost, nintendo uses flash carts, they are 256mb on the DS, 16gb+ for consoles would cost more than the game

still only the 2nd, by the time this becomes widespread, we'll have new consoles to look forward to.

a) Regarding to the format war, Sony took a massive chance since they usually lose format wars with some stupid business decision. Image they actually lost? At least with MS losing nothing big acually happened

b) The differece on gaming between DVD and Blu Ray is slight - and the DVD games on the Xbox looked better for years.

c) If they running into size issues now - who really cares? You're possibly going to see it on a few more games before the console is replaced. Remember, Xbox life is half the PS3 and doesn't need to run to 2017. I'm guessing not many care tbh ...

a) correct howver on the previos format war sony and the porn industry backed vhs and the same 2 backed blu ray so that was a given :)
b) correct again reason xbox had a greater lead time so develpment was already far ahead of the ps3 and a lot of games on the ps3 were pors from xbox
c)probably but MS will try and bleed out as much as they can from the 360 before realing its replacement

I do agree with the Mass Effect 2 comment, a week down the line and still no need to change discs. I come from a time of multiple stiffy discs, and then multiple CDs so it doesn't bother me. Besides, I think if I sit and play for too long I may develop deep vein thrombosis. A nice walk to the Xbox definitely is some needed exercise ;)

Er... no you are very wrong. Sony's format was Betamax (it still is). Secondly the porn industry backed HD DVD, which is strange that Bluray won the format war.

Funny how nobody complained when Final Fantasy VII came on 3 CDs for the original Playstation.

With DVDs, the time between a disc change is so long that it's not even an issue. With the 360 approaching it's EOL, the next Xbox will probably have a BR drive anyway.

Ja, as I said I've been playing ME2 for a week now and haven't even sniffed changing the disc yet. Really no bother to me.

The reason they did that was business, MS never really cared if HD DVD won the format war, but by supporting it instead of blu ray they could cast doubt on the blu ray format and disadvantage Sony and the PS3.
