I have an old acer travelmate 230 running windows xp sp2. I have somehow deleted the dvd rom driver - i believe the driver I nead is ma****a ujda 740. I have googled this but only get to those sites where you have to register - and later pay for a subscription.:mad:

I finally found a driver but it has too install on a stiffy drive for some reason - i do not have any stiffy disks.

Any suggestions!

Do your laptop have any USB ports? If so, why not use a memory stick instead? Stiffy disks are so outdated anyway.

WindowsXP should pick the DVD rom up automatically... You can also use a virtual stiffy drive to emulate a stiffy drive.

windows picks up the drive but gives a driver error.

I want to install ubuntu on the laptop and therefore need the cd rom drive. Both usb ports are broken:mad:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Where can I get a copy of the driver?

Try this Somsteu,

Start the Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit the registry editor and reboot.

Why would you need the windows driver when installing ubuntu? :/

Ubuntu should have it's own drivers.

Thanks @genetic your advice worked. I then realised -from the comment posted by @Qwikslver - that i did not need the windows driver duh!! Got a new problem the dvd-rom is faulty and is taking an age to load ubuntu.

Thanks anyway your help is appreciated.
