DVD Divx Players with USB Host

Hi .

I currently have a DVD Divx player with no USB host, i have seen the new divx dvd players with the USB host but the shop workers says it only plays mp3's & picture, some dont even know. Now ... since it already plays divx movies via dvd's, why can't it play via the USB host. Even the dvd player packaging says it USB Host for mp3's & pictures !

We could connect like a 250Gig external harddrive via USB & watch our media.

What would some people suggest we do for all our divx content ? to watch it on our television sets. Maybe this would be possible next year when Apple comes out with their iTV.

or currently buy a mac mini, buy a DVI to HDMI converter to up the quality, connect this to our TV & use front row, but theres too much work & costs involved here.

I'm puzzled - why would you need to up the quality? The mini's DVI
support digital resolutions up to 1920 by 1200 pixels; supports 20-inch Apple Cinema Display and 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display; supports coherent digital displays up to 154MHz; supports noncoherent digital displays up to 135MHz

Isnt that high enough?

I bought a mini (with a 500gb external firewire drive) for the sole purpose of parking it next to my plasma and I love it :) It plugged right in and with bootcamp installed the missus finally gets to play her sims2.
 
There is no difference in video quality between DVI and HDMI. HDMI simply have the audio with the DVI, and some DRM controls. Anyways, you can't up the quality if the source (and everything in between) is not already high quality, it's like converting a radio source to FLAC and expecting CD (or better) quality sound.
 
Question: Do you get DVD players with built in hard drives? Are they expensive?

Yes. They are called DVD recorders. The LG RH1999 is going for around R2999,-, which have a 250GB HDD and HDMI output.
 
bwana - its like this :

the new local "HD" DVD Players are called HD not because they play HD dvd movies but because it has a HDMI port which connects to the HDMI port on the hd plasma, lcd or tv. The dvd player also has s-video but HDMI port does increase resolution to play movies at 720. or 1080.

Now the same principle would apply for the mac mini with a dvi to hdmi converter connected to a hdmi port on say a large plasma.

This from the samsung.co.za website for their hd dvd player : Samsung's Hi-Definition DVD Players convert standard DVD image quality to High-Definition—for an audio-visual experience unlike that you've experienced from an ordinary DVD player.

Plus personally when i have a 40" LCD on my wall & cables are carefully hidden away, it becomes too much to add my mac mini, sure i love the front row experience but too much of work involved instead the divx dvd players has a remote with also a root like browser to browse your divx movies via external usb harddrive if it was possible. You could run a long ass usb cable from ur dvd player to your computer to upload any movies when you want or connect the other one when you wanna watch it on your beeg ass tv with your beeg ass movie collection or tv seasons :P

I mean when people install their divx & other video codecs in the quicktime library folder & make an alias of a folder on an external harddrive which they use on front row to view their movies, they also rename their folders for their content like maybe the genre or date or whatever strikes your fancy, likewise you would do the same on an external harddrive connected to your divx usb dvd player.

Too much said for one morning, need my dose of coffee now :) :P
 
On those dvd recorders with the built in hard drives, can you like say you could copy your divx stuff onto it & play it on your tv? :P
 
eye_suc - the Neodigits' Helios X5000 HD Network Media Player sounds interesting - it even upscales compressed video stored on your network & it also wireless so no need for cables. Its the size of a dvd player so it will fit just well, gonna go find some pro 's & con' s on the media player !

I dont think buying this cable is going to give you any better picture quality than using dvi from a mac mini. It's certainly not going to increase the resolution even if your lcd supported something higher than the mini was pushing out.

Anyhow - the mini is a computer first and foremost - its also got a remarkably small footprint which made it an ideal replacement for our existing dvd player as its less than half the size. With the bluetooth keyboard and mouse my missus can play her games and I can actually be productive with it when the need arises (or I can post to myadsl instead ;)). The iTV from apple looks interesting but why would I want to stream video to it from elsewhere when I can have it residing there with a mini? Hopefully apple still has something up its sleeve - I guess we'll find out next month :D

Most new samsung DVD Home theatre systems have USB host and they play DIVX, XVID, AVI, MPEG,WINDOWS MEDIA and a few more...i think. i watch all my downloaded media,(DIVX,XVID and AVI) on my home theatre system. If your in Joburg I can hook you up with a good price on a demo unit ....

Eyesuc - one day i will go to the USA, rent a house, buy all i want, put all my stuff in a 40 foot container, stay inside the container while on the ship for 30 days so nothing breaks in the container & when i offload, itll be the happiest day of my life. Boys & their toys ! but dont you worry, ill give you some cubes for your goods, maybe a bunk bed inside the container too :P

I've got from Makro a DVD Recorder no HD but all inputs & outputs, front USB-DV Svideo in -out and the rest. The Manual does not say you can play divx from the USB but it works and coud connect a 250 GB USB Harddisk to it.
For R999,00 not a bad price one only has to watch the boxes because same have got USB in Front + DV but some are missing the USB so I had to back to swop since the Display model had USB, and works very well.
 
hossie - brand & model - pleeeeeeeeeeeez - im not going anywhere this weekend .......... gonna watch all my stuff till my eyes start to pain & i get sick & tired of movies & tv series & not watch anything again, ever, so i can go out during the christmas period .......... :)

Yeah,

I havent plugged a hard drive up to mine yet but there is no reason why it shouldnt work. I will try test today with a mates drive
I usually copy what I want to watch onto a flash disk(1gb).

I have had no problem playing divx ,avi, xvid, wma, vcd(mpeg it think) etc
with my Samsung, Model UP33T
model UP10 , UP30, UP70, UP75 should be the same

Yup

Got the LG one
Pop in DVD with divx files, go to disk and say dubb to hard drive
You can fill all the space with just divx if you like and all can be played on the tv

You can even then copy the divx files to other DVD's
 
Sorry should have sent a PM it is a Sinotec DR-165 DVD Recorder from Makro only watch that the left front has got a DV & USB input behind the little lid on the front side. I put in a 2 GB Mstick and watched 7 Episodes 45 min each.
I also could record from the Stick to DVD only the manual and or the service is not to good, But a Recorder with built in Harddisk is more then R1000,00
The recording quality is excellent.
