Have you tried a new IDE cable? Doubt it will help, but it can't hurt. See if you can get an IDE hard drive to plug in and see if that reads properly. Just to rule out damage to the IDE controller on the motherboard. If you're out of SATA ports, you could always buy a PCI SATA card and give yourself some more ports.
