DVD / Hard drive recorder advice?

I remembered about the Macrovision copy protection that DSTV supposidly uses so this would be a huge deal breaker in this situation. But if what @Ivan Leon mentioned above works fine, then it shouldn't be a problem. All I need to do is make sure that the DVD/HDD recorder that I recommend, has an S-Video input - although I will try standard composite in first, having the s-video option as a backup is a major plus. I'd hate for my friend to spend the money without the benefit.

Now my concerns is for the LG DVD/HDD recorders themselves as to their reliability. Are there any other brands that I can look at - except Warfdale, not too confident about Sinotech. @Hemps can you give me the model number for your Philips unit?

@howardb The Hauppauge is a great idea, but at the end of the day, they need to burn the content onto DVD.

sony or samsung aint bad, but like i said (maybe im a die hard LG fan) i never had any problems,I notice on my unit it does generate afair bit of heat so ventilation is key.

THe solution I outlined above works for BOTH conventional playlist recordings - the 80 hours you can record on the SD-PVR - as well as for the additional VOD content - and S-VIDEO is a HIGHER quality signal than plain composite RCA!

My dvd recorder is a Sinotech DR-365G - had it about 3 years now - have the occasional coffee cup coaster - disks that do not finalise correctly - it uses DVD+R discs only - (depends on the Brands I use - LOL) but otherwise had no major issues with it - just had to replace the internal cooling fan about a year ago! (Same issue as the fan in the SD-PVR - gets noisy - and then FAILS!)

The next SD-PVR update will enable copy protection on both rca, rf, etc. HDD Recorder - No problem as long as you buy a video stabiliser which strips the protection.

Morning All,

I need help connecting our HDD DVD recorder (LG 320G). I have tried various options, to no avail. I will give a quick break down of the components connected, if someone could please assist where I am going wrong.

TV has the following sources :
TV (not connected - we don't have an aerial)
SCART 1 - Wii
SCART 2 - was open, currently connected HDD DVD Recorder
Composite - PVR
S-Video - empty
Component 1 - dvd player with surround sound
Component 2 - empty
HDMI - PS3
PC - Empty

I followed the steps above (SCART to S-video/RCA to PVR), but I seemed to miss a step, as the HDD was not connected to the TV, so I could not see it's menu. Also, the HDD does not have an S-Video INPUT, only tuner, AV1 - 2, and DV (camcorder).

So I have now used the SCART to S-Video, and connected the HDD to the TV this way, which means I get a menu for the HDD on the TV, but the HDD is not connected to the PVR in any way.

What is my next step please? Or what do I have to do over?
