DVD Library - I HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME

I want to use software like "DVD Profiler" or "All My Movies" or something alike that I can have all my dvd's that I own in one place,

BUT

Is there a DVD Safe-like equipment where I can store my DVD's in their covers, that can connect to my pc via USB/Serial port that can communicate with a library program like these mentioned above, and when I want a dvd to watch it, I choose the DVD on my pc and say eject and the safe's little door will open where it will push out the dvd so that I can take it...almost like a frontloader cd player in a car that can take 6cd's, but I wanna store 500 DVDs in my safe that can communicate with my pc.

I am just wondering if such a thing exist?

The past hour I have searched the internet and the stuff is almost doubled the price that is in US...do you by any chance know of this type of stuff in South Afrcia for +- R1000?

Damn double threads.

Buy a 2TB hard drive, rip all your DVDs and put them in any decent media player library. Then lock away all your discs and voila, you have security and convenience.
 
I have always been saying on this forum that using DVD's for storage is a sucky way.


DVD Solution:
500 x DVDs = 500 x R3. that's R1500.
Electrical DVD Vault thing: +- R1000.
Total cost: around R2500.

Hard Drive Solution:
3 x 1TB HDD = 3 x R459. that's R1377 (excl VAT)
Total Cost: around R1500.

So:
- if you buy Hard Drives, you will get 2.8TB after a format. cost: R1500
- If you buy DVD's, you will only get 2.3TB after years of burning. cost: R2500



HDD Advantages: You can move things. rename things. delete things. instant access. you can sell it 2nd hand at a later stage.
HDD Disadvantages: you can lose stuff

DVD Advantages: portable?
DVD Disadvantages: can't do anything once the files have been burned. you can't sell it really, and no instant access. also takes a loooooong time to burn 500 DVDs.

by the time you get to your 10th purchase of the "Dacal DC-101G" storage system I will be putting the same amount of information on 1 single drive :D

Not quite - 10 x Dacals would be 1500 discs. With BlueRays at 25GB each that would mean you have a 40TB drive. Yes I agree that the HDD storage mechanism is better, but the OP asked to store and manage 500 discs.

what's the cost of blurays again?
 
I haven't used a CD in ages, I still have my CD collection but it's been gathering dust for years since I digitized it. I try avoid using DVD's.

Optical media sucks - rip to hard drive FTW.

Compared to the price of flash drives it makes more sense price wise to buy a Blu-Ray Disc. Logically in the long run HDDs(or SSDs when they are reasonable priced) would make more sense. If bonus features and all that good stuff still needs to be retained one can just make ISOs.
