At work we have a DVD player that claims it can play DIVX/MP4 via USB. The purpose of this is to view our videos and other aviation video clips.
I have tested the player with certain AVIs and had success. However, the videos I edited at work cannot be played, although its in an AVI format.

Can anyone tell me what encoders I should use that will be covered by the DIVX/MP4 claim of the player. Or any other advice will be appreciated.

Most of these players required codec updates after a while. Google the brand/model and see if it returns the process. Alternatively take it to the authorised repairer and ask them to update it for you (at a cost!!).

Won't it be easier to just convert the video file. In addition, am I right to assume that the player itself will not downsize the resolution of the video clip, for example I will not be able to play a video clip that's 1920x1020 on a regular TV.

True.

But the DivX format is extremely convenient. Remember that whatever device you plug into the USB port should have FAT partition as most players do not recognise NTFS yet.

Ok, I managed to achieved success, will see how long until the next problem introduce itself.
The setup are, a DVD player which can play videos from a USB device and a regular TV.
It seems that the AVIs I tried to view not was not compatible with the TVs resolution. When I downsized it it worked.
I used a program called WinAvi to convert the files. For video I used the MPeg-4 Microsoft variant version 3 and for audio Mp-3.
I then simply changed the frame size, making it smaller for the TV.
