if i insert a dvd or cd in my dvd rom, and then go to my computer etc, it always shows me the file name of the disc that was in when i switched on my pc.

so it doesn't matter how many discs i insert the file name still shows the first disc's name

and the only way to bypass this, is as soon as i insert a new disc i go to start>run>d: or e:
btw this happens on both drives. going to my computer and pressing f5 doesn't help either

could this because of the dvd backup software that i have on my machine, or anydvd or any software of this nature?

i have winXP sp2 installed

any help will be much appreciated

oh, and i'm glad to be part of the mybroadband community, been reading the forums for sometime now

I have the exact same problem.
It has something to do with autorun that by turning it off it doesnt bother to check what content is on the disc. so it doesnt bother spinning up the disc right away and naturaly it wont read the disc title either.
as to how you fix it???
ive never looked into it because it didnt bother me.
sorry

What a putz

For some reason I felt bad that I didnt actually help you in solving the problem so I decided to work it out... here is what you need to do:

open the registry editor (start - run - regedit)
navigate to
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
as well as
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
for both these entries make sure that the value for 'NoDriveTypeAutoRun' is set to 95 (dbl click it to change it)
then go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
over here check that 'AutoRun' is set to 1
close regedit
restart the pc

Everything should now be sorted - mine is :D

Nice one Zwick ;) I read it and wanted to google, but I forgot, give a link to the solution as well :)

if your suggestion works, and i hope it will, then there wil be a six pack waiting for you :)

The easy way to disable autorun:
run "gpedit.msc"
Select "Administrative templates / System"
Double click on "Turn off autoplay" in the right pane

Zeb you may be wrong there - autoplay and autorun are not the same thing.
Autorun is basically allowing the drive to read ahead and allow autorun scripts to execute while autoplay is XP's ability to search the content of the media and perform actions choosen by the user.

Wizdumb - my knowledge is free, but I am keen to know if it worked for you.

Speaking of GPO's - Here is a nifty trick you may or may not know:
If someone has locked down a standalone WinXP pc with GPO's (one gpo applies to all users, even administrators) you can get around it by going to your folder options in windows explorer and untick the last option on the 'view' tab (use simple file sharing)
then browse to C:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy and go into the properties of that folder and click on the security tab.
Simply add your username to that list and deny yourself 'read and execute' rights to that folder.
After restarting the pc windows will try apply the GPO but seeing as how you have been denied access rights it wont.

and there goes GPO security out the window - nice one Mr Gates.

it seems to have worked zwick, loaded a couple of discs last night and it all worked like it should.

i followed your advice blindly seeing as i know as much about a pc's registry as most men about women.....

....a big mexican wave for you :)
