As the title says.... I'm looking for something that's easy to use (I'm thinking of the parentals) - just pop the disc in, click once or twice, and let the software do the rest.

Needs to work on G4

Thanks

I'm assuming that you can run Windows progs on a G4 ( not sure ???)... DVD Shrink is great but only works with about 2 out of 3 disks. Sadly, the product is not being updated, so that ratio is only likely to get worse with time.

If DVD Shrink fails, there is a product called DVDFab Decrypter that will copy all but the toughest disks to your hard drive. Once you've done that you can then use DVD Shrink's "Open File" function, point to DVD directory created by DVDFab and proceed as before.

To back up my disks, I like to re-author them using just the main movie and sound track. That way I get the best possible quality for a single sided DVD.

No, Window's can't run on a G4. Which I'm quite thankful for.

On windows I've shown my mom how to pull the decrypted directory structure with DVD-Decrypter, then use DVD-Shrink with that. DVD-Decrypter has never failed for me.

So if all else fails I can deal with two programs on OSX - one to rip and one to shrink (re-authoring is far to complex for the parents)

I use a MacTheRipper/Roxio Popcorn combo. MacTheRipper removes the encryption while Popcorn ($49) does a nice job of reducing the file size - even removing all the menu's.

I havent tried but you might be able to reduce the file size with ffmpegX.
