Hi GUys

I want to buy a DVD writer..what should I look for.?
What is dual layer ?
What is lightscrible ?
Is there a writer that gives both above ?
Whats should I be paying ?

THanks
DD

imo Lite-on is the best option when it comes to performance per rand. It all depends what you want to do. Storage, dvd movies, etc?

ie. Lightscribe is "image burning" on the top side of the disc in shades of grey. The discs however cost a bit more and if you have a printer that can print on discs it would be better

Thanks Guys

Does lightscibe and dual layer only work on one type of disks

I want to do movies mostly ..

LG FWT!!! :D

After buying Sony and Samsung drives (both once each), I've never bought anything but LG drives again (5 in total now)

They're not the TOP of the line but they usually perform up there with the best (most optical drive review sites usually give them VERY good scores) and you can't beat the price (well at least last I checked the other, enthusiast brands cost way more)

As for lightscribe, well it's just my opinion but it sucks :D
you pay more for the drive and word is the Lightscribe discs aren't so reliable.
Also lightscribe drives usually use different internal hardware from their normal peers, so if the drive without lightscribe performs great don't expect the drive with the lightscribe to perform the same. I saw quite a few articles where the lightscribe drives perform worse than their non-lightscribe peers (within the same drive family).

EDIT: LG GSA-H12N

I see the LiteOn is a few R cheaper but @ only 16x. Don't think you'll notice the difference but you should search for online reviews before making the final buy ;)
Google is your friend

Dual layer media is quite expensive now. Not worth copying movies as they are originally. You have to reduce quality a bit and compress using software to fit on single layer.

BenQ DW1640. One of the best writers you can get. It's a steal for the price you pay. That's if you've got an account at Esquire. :)

Hehe was wondering if anyone was going to mention BenQ on here. Not only that but you did better, you mentioned the exact same model I've got that's still going strong :D

Reason I chose BenQ is the price and their very regular firmware updates. This drive is one of the beter drives for burning on crappy and good quality discs alike. I've NEVER had a bad burn on this drive no matter what disks I bought! In case you're wondering I've written well over a 100 discs on this drive, with 100% success rate. :D

NEC or Pioneer :). Although my Centrino laptop has a Lucky Goldstar and it works VERY well. :) ASUS also has a good rep.
