Hi to all.
A kid brought a pc in with a newish ECS motherboard, E5300 cpu.
He complained that the dvd writer was not displayed under "My Computer" any more.
Unfortunately he could not leave the box with me and I had little time looking at the pc.
Anyway, I looked at the device manager and saw that the TSST Corp Samsung writer and a AXV rom was disabled. Both gave the possible solution that the driver was corrupted. I uninstalled the drives and restarted with the same result. I disabled the AXV drive and uninstalled the Samsung drive. Still not working.
I disabled the virtual (AXV) drive and tried again, same result.
I saw that every time the Samsung drive is picked up it shows up in My Computer and Device Manager. A "cd rom" soon was detected after that and the Samsung drive disappears from "My Computer" and then displays the error in the device manager. I then unistalled Achol120 to get rid of the virtual drive. Did not help.
I removed all references to the TssT and AXV drives in the registry. Did not help. It seemed that there was a conflict between the Samsung drive and the the cd drom that is detected, but does not show up anywhere.
I then disabled the Plug & Play service and the Samsung drive was the detected and worked fine and no 2nd cd rom was detected.
At that stage, the kid left with the box to come back tomorrow.
There is 1 ide controller on the board. The writer is the only drive on the cable and I tried master and slave options.
The same problems occurred with a replacement drive.
Did not swap out any cables.
Did not check for Bios updates as he played games till Sunday. His sister used the pc after that and Monday he noticed the problems.
He checked for viruses with a free Avira version, I did not check for viruses.
Could it be the XP driver that is corrupted?
