My DVD writer is on it's way out (sounds like a helicopter taking off) and I'm now hunting for a replacement. It's official though; I've had it with Samsung optical drives - this is the second drive to pack up within a month of its warranty expiring.

Any recommendations in terms of brand, supplier and price? Not interested in SAMSUNG for obvious reasons:D

Oh yes, IDE drive preferrably

Was just about to say don't get samsung when i saw the thread title. :-)

I say look for Benq and pioneer.

You can always save a few thousand rand and get blu-ray :) Or just get yourself a LG-DVD writer with Lithscribe. Mine is working quite nice.

Ok, suppliers? Where do you get BenQ? Don't recall seeing that in retailers. By retailers I mean actual shops not online :D

I know Hifi Corp do LiteOn. LiteOn is an OEM DVD writer manufacturer and companies like BenQ and Sony and a few others rebrand them and sell them as their own.

I would not touch Lite-on drives - bloody unreliable! I've tried ASUS drives... they're okay, but the best thus far has been the LG drives - All my PC's here and at work are using them. - Works without fail!.

On the contrary, I've never had a LiteOn pack up. :)

Sony uses them, and Sony drives are regarded to be very good.

Yea, I know Sony uses them! I've had several Sony Drives, and have had Lite-ON drives... but to be honest, Rectron was getting pissed off because I kept returning them! If i go thru my invoices, I've returned EVERY SINGLE Lite-ON Drive, some SONY drives, but LG, out of ... far too many to count, I can only find 2 i've returned under warranty! I'll stick to LG Thanx : )

Lite-ON issues - refuses to read discs it recorded to only reading CD's and no DVD's - a common problem!

Sony - much the same

LG - Disc tray close failure on both i've returned

Samsung - would burn disc, but disc remains blank after the record, Disc won't eject, or Recorded content will be damaged or sections unreadable after record.

Never tried Benq - I'd rather not!.

few instancs ive seen drives make the sound described in op is when a piece of paper (from cd label) got stuck in the tray

any way, LG gets my vote

+1, I second that.

My previous drive ( Samsung ) made my disks flying projectiles and eventually with a very loud "explosion" with one of my original game dvd's in it, gave it's last spin. So no more Samsung optical drives...

They all seem to be as k4k as each other these days. I have a HP CD-Writer 8 years or so old working fine but all these new dvd-rws last 13 months and pack up.

Sony/Lite-On drives brilliant or LG.

+1 although I have had a lg fail on me before.

I have a older Sony and a new Samsung that came with the computer. The Samsung is a POS to say the least.
I also had a HP way back that used liteon but I dunno if this is still the case.
Have also heard very good things about Plextor but they are pricey and hard to find.
