Anyone have one of these lightscribe DVD writers? - how do you find them? are they worth an upgrade. i read that the writing on the disk is only good for plus minus 9 months then it fades away??

I have a lightscribe. It is great. The hassle is getting the disks. I havent had it for 9 months yet so will keep an eye on the disks I've written. But that sounds like a tall story to me. As for advice if I had the choice again I would buy a standard dvd writer and invest in a good cd printer and buy printable disks. It does look very cool though. I have played around with photoshop and you can make some coooooool disks. I have one which looks three dimensional almost like a hologram. It is very nice. Hope that helps. :)

Its better to use one of those canon printers (4200 or similar), they give colour and last very long.

Do they print on stick-on labels. I have had problems with labels before in that they caused the DVD's to not run properly in a DVD player due to the label causing the DVD to be unbalanced. I researched this and after a number of similar cases, I removed all labels on my DVD collection and never had a problem again - but labels do look more professional hence my interest in this lightscribe.

The canon printers prints directly onto the disks, but you have to buy printable disks. They have a completely white surface. You can find Verbatim printable disks in allmost any shop.

Yeah, what GiveMeSpeed said, you print on the printable disk itself, they are also not much more than normal disks and they shouldn't be hard to find...

Canon Ip4200 or Canon IP 5200, both nice printers for that. Think they just over or around R1000.

Rather get a good normal DVD writer. Like a NEC ND4550A or ND4551A.

I bought a 4550 and it flashes to a 4551. The 4551 can print labels on the bottom of any DVD (only in the area where no data has been written though) and also on the tops of discs using LabelFlash tech, their answer to LightScribe.

Plus, the NECs are known for their good quality burns. Check up some reviews. I really think neither LabelFlash nor LightScribe is really worth it though, since you need to buy the discs that specifically work on them and are more expensive.

supersunbird has a good suggestion. Get one of those printers that can print on the discs directly and some discs that have printable top surfaces like the Verbatims.

And there in lies the rub!

I've got the samsung lightscribe drive, and while it's great, I can't find media anywhere!

I had the same problem a while back. No stock anywhere. eventually found some and bought it all, 12 boxes of cd-r and 15 boxes of dvd-r. How much are you willing to pay for a box of 10. :) Just kidding.

http://www.pcint.co.za/ has dvd-r but no cd-r.

Just came from Makro - they stock the memorex lightscribe in packs of 10 for R79. Their website says they have stock at all branches.

But yea, I hear you - never thought of the printer option for printing directly. I use the printable verbatims all the time. Need to upgrade printer!!! - damn

As for lightscribe I am sure the technology will evolve quickly making the current one obsolete quite soon.

I've got a lacie external lightscribe dvd writer... found -as others have- that discs can be scarce and expensive.

Also it takes >20min to burn a disc label (best quality).. so u gotta be patient;)

hehe, I dont really have a problem with discs. Just need to make sure I order a pack or 2 before each trip to my suppliers. Order about 2-3 days before, and they make sure they have stock.

I would say the only thing that irritates me is the time to "print" the image. takes ages on lightscribe.

If anybody in Jozi wants discs, give me a shout. On the topic of discs being more expensive, they cost about 40-50c more than identical non-lightscribe discs. And soon I am going to be getting color lightscribe discs which will be awesome.

I'll grab some of those colour ones once you have them. I have heard about that but with all the blank stares I got when asking for the normal ones I thought I wouldn't even bother asking about colour ones. Drop me a pm when you do have them.

I find the image takes about the same time as burning a full cd which makes sense so it depends on your drive speed.
