So I know that VGA is below both of them.. and then DVI and then HDMI..

But why is that?

I heard someone saying something like..

HDMI is for TV and stuff.. where DVI is for gaming and computers..

Is that true?

Because i'm planning to get a new monitor.. and I need to get the cables..

I'm going to use the monitor for Gaming. (PC)

But my GPU has a mini HDMI and 2xDVI

What is recommeded?

HDMI or DVI?

Thanks

Basically HDMI is video and audio together, DVI is just video. Google the two and look at the wikipedia results.

HDMI is digital audio and video.
DVI is meant for digital video, but the graphics cards often output analog video and possibly even audio via the DVI port.
VGA is just analog video.

For this reason, you can only convert DVI to VGA only on some DVI ports, since not all DVI outputs include the analog video signals.
Also: you cannot convert HDMI to VGA or vice versa, unless you actually have a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) included in the conversion device.

Hey..

I see.. thanks.. :)

But on my new monitor there isn't any buildt in sound.. so.. does that mean that.. HDMI is useless?

HDMI = DVI + sound

That is why you get cheap HDMI-to-DVI converters as well as DVI-to-HDMI

Just want to ask..

my computer has Mini HDMI..

Does that mean some component is missing or is it just like a micro SD and a normal flash drive?

it's just a smaller port. same as the nokia n8.
av still comes through the same.

mini HDMI is just a smaller connector for HDMI, so you'll just need an adapter from mini HDMI to HDMI, which is usually bundled with the graphics card/laptop.

Oh.. It's fine, because I have the HDMI mini..

Just thought maybe the normal size one is better than the smaller size one..

If you know what I mean..

Thanks anyway

No, HDMI can carry a higher resolution picture than DVI. DVI is capped at WUXGA @ 60hz where HDMI can go beyond 2K. While most of use will only got up to Full-HD, it still makes a difference.

HDMI also attracts royality which DVI does not.

No. You then use an optical cable to carry the sound from your monitor to your sound device.

Well at the end.. HDMI wins lol

And I can use the audio port from my computer instead of doing all of that?

Well you dont need to use the sound going over HDMI. I disable the HDMI sound card as I dont use it. I only use HDMI for video. When I get my PS3 I'll use the HDMI for sound.
