Dx12 SLI VRAM stacking. Anyone experienced this yet?

Has anyone here experienced the supposed VRAM stacking with SLI with the new DirectX 12?

Most new games support Dx12 so this should improve memory intensive games.

If it works it'll just be another good reason to get myself another 970 :D
 
Games need to support DX12 MDA.
The only game that does this to date is Ashes of the singularity.

So. good idea if you absolutely love Aots.

Isn't MDA only for different types of GPU's? AMD and Nvidia mixed?

Most new games that support Dx12 usually get drivers from Nvidia for SLI a month or so after release.
And it's hard for me to think that devs will release AAA level games without proper SLI support. So new games that use Dx12 should in theory also allow VRAM stacking across 2 SLI gpu's?
 
No.

SLI and MDA are compeltely different technologies.

Just because a game runs on DX12 doesn't mean it supports MDA/LDA/MultiGPU.

You can still use SLI of course, Just don't hold your breath for every game to support MGPU.

True. But I'm sure that AAA titles that are released that use Dx12 (ROTTR, Deus Ex, Battlefield 1, Watch Dogs 2, etc) would be optimized to use multi-GPU usage? Meaning that they should also then support the VRAM stacking?

I'm not interested in playing older games with SLI, it's mostly focused towards newer games that have a high probability of supporting the new Dx12 Technologies.

No, multi gpu & vram stacking is left up to the devs and so far most have not bothered.

This makes me sad. I'm sure there would be a LOT of people who would be very happy if they could play games that stack their VRAM
 
Hmm.. I would expect the advantages of stacked vram to be marginal at best. Sounds like "marketing" is at it again.
 
Honestly don't expect many if any. The amount of work for the devs is disproportionate to the size of the market. It's easier to use standard SLI/CrossFire, which does not support memory stacking.

Yeah - it looks like they expect the game devs to do the work that was previously done for SLI in the graphics drivers. While the game devs have more contextual information (which I believe could conceivable be used to achieve a marginal advantage), it looks like a hell of a lot of work, and likely won't be done as well as SLI/CrossFire. I also doubt that heterogeneous gaming hardware support is much of a draw.

True. From what I've read it wouldn't even utilize all of the vram.

For example: 2x GTX970's would probably only have 5Gb-6Gb combined VRAM if lucky.. But even so, it's still an improvement over the stock amount. But by this point one would ask yourself if it wouldn't be more logical to sell your 970 and use the money you were going to use to buy another one and just simply get a 980 ti or even a GTX 1070

The "utilize all of the vram" pitch is a bit of a misnomer, it's more of "has finer control of all vram" - in all likelihood, a developer would use the combined vram in almost exactly the same way SLI does, so there's not much of an advantage.

Whether you bleed GeForce green or Radeon red, we can all agree that the potential performance gains to be found using the lower-level DirectX 12 and Vulkan APIs are significant. Crytek, creator and curator of the ever-popular CryEngine, is doing its part to further adoption of the new APIs. The folks at OC3D noticed that Crytek has updated its online roadmap for the engine. That document shows DX12 multi-GPU and Vulkan support as "on target" for upcoming releases.

Yep, I guess that the dev community will all adopt in 2017.
