Komatipoort - The commander of the local detective branch, Captain Million Khumalo, shot his attacker dead before dying himself on Tuesday morning.

Khumalo was critically wounded on Tuesday morning when he and his colleagues were looking for a suspect who apparently shot a police officer in the stomach in May in Komatipoort's main road.

The man, David Mhlonso, 48, had been on parole since 2007 after he had served a sentence for murder.

Superintendant Sibongile Nkosi said they had been waiting at the Daantjie satellite police office on the outskirts of Nelspruit for Mhlonso to report there as part of his parole conditions.

Nkosi said: "When he saw Khumalo, he let loose on him with a 9mm pistol".

An unknown bystander also was shot dead.

Police pinned Mhlonso down and took his firearm from him. He wrenched free and ran.

In spite of his serious injury, Khumalo gave chase and shot him dead. Khumalo collapsed shortly afterwards.

He was taken to the local clinic, but was dead on arrival.

The cops in this country need to be more like the yanks (at least in the movies) and start making killing cops bad for everyones criminal business. One cop dies and ten suspects get shot "resisting" arrest.

Agreed but the problem here is that a LOT of cops are corrupt and its not unforseeable that an ohterwise innocent person might have to kill a cop in self defence. The last thing you want then is the cops treating you like a cop killer!!

A cops life is worth no more and no less than a normal civilians..
No special treatment please.
 
He needs some recognition. Particularly from the state. Pride and recognition need to encouraged in the police force.
