Hi.

I am considering a new ISP. I see many of them use 'dynamic IP'.

I also use UnoTelly so I can watch Netflix, and others. Will I have to update my IP with Unotelly each time i want to watch Netflix (a bit of a schlep) since I get a new IP each time I connect to the web (dynamic IP)?

I'm currently at Telkom (which I am planning to leave) and I currently do not have to update IP the whole time - does this imply Telkom gives static IP's?

Any ideas? Which ISPs offer static IPs as a default?

Thanks.

Axxess is sorting this out for free with its DNS suit apparently, you wont even need Unotelly, you can do it for free from their control panel from what I understand. Its a service called "Global Axxess".

I'm not sure if you can just point certain addresses, like Unotelly, at the US/UK etc with Axxess though. I've been unable to find it on my control panel.

So he should join Axxess and cancel Unotelly?
You know Axxess has a severe shaping/throttling policy right?

From what I understand about the service it will only let you access US services - so while the US Netflix is probably the most comprehensive the ability to access their services in other countries allows for a much wider variety.

If you have adsl you only get a new Ip when you reboot your router. So just do t disconnect.

Yup its just a policy as far as my experience goes, has never affected the account my family has.

Thanks. That is good news. So the 'dynamic IP' process will not give a new IP every time I fire up my browser or switch on my tv, but only every time I switch off my modem? Do I have it right?

Telkom also uses dynamic IP's.

As was said already it only gives you a new one if the router disconnects.

So that's probably why you think it doesn't change because you haven't needed to do it much.

Correct.

Your Router/Modem has an IP not your TV or Browser.

Correct.

I only reboot my router like once every two months.

Remember you only get assigned a new IP every time you connect. So if you stay connected you should not have a problem. Depends on how you run your internet. Mine is on 24/7.

You can setup a free DynDNS account on your router (most routers come with that ability). Then take the address you setup and set it up in Unotelly's website. That's what I did, and I never have to manually update my IP ever again. If the router reboots or I switch to a different ISP, a few seconds later I'm connected again.

I paid for the yearly subscription because that sits at $5 a month, saves me 50% on a month to month subscription

I have Unotelly account and I have a phone with Android (if you have one) - there is an app for Unotelly on Android where you start up the app and press "Refresh IP Address". Don't even have to leave the bed or the Roku to update. Easy Peasy :)

There's also an api update Web link you can bookmark. Just load the bookmark from whatever Web device is closest

I just set up a cron on my firewall to update it every hour. Vox likes changing my IP quite often so running it every hour makes sure it's always up to date.

We provide automatic (no configuration, no 3rd party required) dynamic dns (opt-in, at https://online.telkomsa.net/smt) which I believe you can use with Unotelly so you don't need to update Unotelly with your IP.
