I have tried to use several dyn dns update software so that i could access my pc from work but it seem s i am unsuccessful. I have tried it both in Windows and Linux but still i am unable to access any open on my pc. I even diasabled iptables in Linux and the Windows firewal but no success.

Does any tried to use dyndns or any dynamic update software and it work? I am currently using hamachi but i don't want to use hamachi.

If any anyone has a solution, please help?

I think you need to ask MTN to open your sim so you can get a public IP address. Normally they give you a private IP that doesn't work with Dyndns.

MTN will only do it if your on contract otherwise not.

Ok thanks, but i was only using this to test vpn for one of the Linux certifications i was doing. I don't think i will need a public ip, i thought the data card would support dyndns.

You will need a public IP address if you want to be able to find your computer using its dyndns name.

What is a typical IP address that MTN assign these days, and what dyndns client are you using?

Dyndns update from dyndns.com in Win XP and i use ddclient in Linux, still from dyndns.com

Another option is to get a Vodacom pre-paid SIM card, they assigned public IP addresses now, and register for the 'unrestricted' APN to allow incoming connections.

70.241.16.240 but sometimes it varies. Tell me if u need access, i can give the ip when i connect from one of the testing pc's i use. There is private stuff there, so anyone can access. Actually i want to offer my friends free access to ssh shell account, that's why i need this to work without using log me in hamachi. With hamachi everything works fine.

Do you know the software i can use to unlock the data card so that it works on both vodacom and mtn? Because at the moment, the card only takes mtn

Interesting! That IP apparently belongs to AT&T in Houston, Texas.
How did you determine your IP address?

AFAIK MTN have never locked any of their data cards.

I get it thru dyndns updater or domaintools.com thy can determine your current ip on the page.
I think that page may be confused by a transparent proxy, best is to use "ipconfig /all" in Windows or "ifconfig" in Linux.

Yep you are right. That's a proxy ip. In Linux i get 172.16 address and the remote ip is the range of 10.64 network.

I use the 10.64.64.64 as my default gateway, since my internal network uses the 192.168 range. ifconfig won't give the right ip, it gives me the non-routable 172.16 range. Unless i somehow configure pppd so that i use my own ip instead of getting a dynamic ip. Will try that now, but that's going to be some trouble because i use wvdial, am sure i shld edit the file in /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial.

Easiest would be to get a vodacom sim and use the unrestricted APN.

Maybe you can use the vodacom software with the modem or just get generic software.
