Hey

I am currently using OpenWeb and as far as i know they do not give static IPs. Therefore I must be running off a dynamic IP. When i got to Internet Protocol it is shown to obtain the IP address automatically and I am pretty sure that means my IP is dynamic.

Now what I am wanting to do is reset my IP. Apparently this should work:

Run -> cmd -> ipconfig /release -> ipconfig /renew

But it still displays my same IP address.

Can I have some help on how to change my IP address?
Btw i am currently using Vista.

Thanks in advance

As far as I know, that will only renew your IP of the machine. Your IP address for your Adsl connection should be reset if you reset your adsl connection.

I could be mistaken here, but that is my understanding of it.

How do I reset my Adsl connection? Switch off the router? And for how long should it be switched off for?

Switching the router off is not a good idea.
What happens is that your connection is left open on the network, because it is not closed down properly.
This means that when you then turn the router on again, and it tries to connect, the connection will be rejected by the network. The error will be something along the lines of : You are already connected / Maximum connections exceeded.

What you need to do is get into your router's configuration website, and use features inside that website to properly disconnect and reconnect the ADSL connection.

But, even if you do it properly, there is a good chance that your ISP will simply give you the exact same ip address when you re-connect.

So would this be right?
I go access my routers home page and click 'restart router'?
I am using the Telkom Mega 100WR2

No, not restart router. On the landing page of the router admin, under status somewhere it should have a 'Disconnect' button. Click that. Wait. Page should reload and now offer a 'Connect' button. Re-connect. If all else fails, you can use your restart router command.

Ok well there is no 'Disconnect' button so is it safe to restart my router through the router homepage?

Well, the worst that could happen is that it cannot re-connect for about 15 minutes.
The longest I've had to wait after my scripts went haywire was about 15 minutes.
Try it and see, but now at least you're pointing the solution at the problem.

You will be fine using the Restart command from within the router admin as this command will disconnect the ISP connection properly before rebooting unlike simply switching the router off at the power button.

Ok, well I pressed "restart router' and it restarted and now it is connected again but my IP address hasn't changed.. What now :?

It's not uncommon to be issued the same IP by your ISP after reconnection.
Why the importance in changing IP?

I am trying to get onto a forum that someone has recommended but the everytime i go to it , it says my IP address has been banned by an administrator? But i have never been to the site before.. So that is why I want to reset my IP.. Is there not a way that will guarantee a change of my IP?

No, I don't think so.
You'll more than likely find that the forum admin has blocked an IP range anyway.
You should contact the forum admin and they may lift the ban.

Thanks for your help, if anyone else has any advice please let me know.

I've had similar problems with forums in the past and contacting forum admin has always resolved it quickly...you should do that and it saves you all this hassle of trying to change IP's etc.

Unless of course you actually have been banned and forum admin aren't interested in you, then my advice is go find another forum that wants you.

You can also try googling for IP changers or similar software programs that can try spoof IP addresses.

Can you maybe point me in the right direction regarding this program? I want to get a trustworthy program

Maybe someone else can, I've got no use for something like that so have no experience with them.
