What advice would you give to someone starting an E Commerce site?
Would you go and buy a ready made solution?
Would you use a flash website with a commerce plug in?

Need some advice please, would be electronics based.

Thanks guys

Well I would do my own thing because the web-site currently: (examples)
Prophecy, Landmarkpc, Take2, wootware
All lack the features I think they need. However it wouldn't take me more than a month to create what I have in mind for an excellent e-commerce based site (well PC site).

If you have the skills to do it yourself, and you feel that current solutions don't meet your requirements, by all means. Otherwise I would just get a current solution...
Hiring someone leaves too much room for a screw up + costs money. Rather get a site up and running then if you need more features, work from there (eg. hire, etc.)

Prestashop is probably one of the easiest.
PHP, flash, plus whatever else you want, they have modules available for everything.
Prestashop isn't big in SA yet but HUGE in Europe.

Install WAMP as your web and mySQL server.
dowload prestashop, clickety-click later and you have an online site with content management, client management, billing, invoicing etc.

some examples:

http://www.timefy.com/en/
http://www.solairio.com/
http://www.cutmans.co.za

Interesting, thanks, would people in SA use a site like this to buy? So basically the cost to set this up is minimal?
Problem may come in when using all the modules you may need such as paypal and google stuff it seems

What do the majority of sites in SA use?
Virtuemart?
Magento?
Are the plug ins free?

Once your site is up, how difficult is it to add products an change stuff?

Thanks guys

Whatever you do, do not use a Flash website with an e - commerce plugin :)

If I were you, I would use a free script (the ones you have mentioned, plus Zen Cart is also an option), together with a decent theme / template.

Adding / changing products and categories is mostly a very simple point and click process.

Flash with an e-commerce plugin? You GET those???

Without knowing where you want to end up you can't begin to think of what you need to get there. That's basically my advice. The rest will follow

@Bubbatentoe
Is there a localization pack for South Africa? Or do I have to make one myself? And Payment gateway integration?

We use Prestashop - it is very easy to use and quick to learn
