I was wondering,
is outlook express the only email prog on the computer, or is their something else and is it better. this is of course for windows and I use xp.

I would take look into Thunderbird if I were you, it's very lightweight and efficient.

gmail from google... as most people stay online now and not in dial up days of connecting, receiving email and disconnecting.

Although I fully support Open Source or freeware software and use Thunderbird as my primary email solution at work. I can safely say that there is no other email application like Microsoft Outlook. I love the 2007 edition with Service Pack 2 and I see on a daily basis what it's capable of. Sorry if I disappoint some folks, but it just rocks. Easy to use, great features and with apps like Xobni it becomes a full fledged communication tool. Nuff said.

I also suggest using Thunderbird. I great mail application :)

Edit: Beat me to it.

MS Outlook has a lot of unintentional features (read: bugs) :P I have seen on a lot of occasions that it simply forgets passwords and strange behaviour sometimes.

All in a days work Bullfrog. I do remote as well as inhouse support and Outlook issues in the past year have taken the least time to resolve and were the easiest to solve than most others. I'm not saying it's flawless, far from it, but it does what it does and it does it pretty damn well.

Fair enough but is the OP prepared to pay for it I wonder?

Never knew you could buy it separately but at about R1000 it still seems pricey.

I have to agree, although he did say alternative to Outlook Express...

Outlook is an animal all on its own.

Thunderbird & GMail are good but I have gotten too used to Outlook ... :(

For a simple in place upgrade, Windows Live Mail should do the trick. More advanced and has far less bugs that Outlook Express. Most people don't really need more than what that offers.

That being said I could never use anything but pure Outlook, it has it's issues but I love it.

If you are looking for free, Thunderbird is good.

Outlook (not express) is solid, I use it on my PC and Entourage on my Mac and does everything I need and more.

+1

I'm using Evolution Mail on Ubuntu and it does the trick, but Office Outlook 2007 looks and works fantastic on Windows Vista.

Fix Outlook

Some naive people in this thread are saying Outlook is great. Maybe you are not aware that Microsoft will take E-mail back 10 years when they release Outlook 2010.

Microsoft are using word as the html rendering engine (not to compose e-mail only, but to display mail received)

People want e-mail that is advancing with the times - so why is microsoft taking email backwards with the 2010 version?

The only hope for Outlook is if microsoft listens to advice and fixes outlook already - see this site

If microsoft fails to fix outlook then they have lost the plot completely.

As form me, for 7 months I have been using Thunderbird, and I am not looking back.

Well said. You just need to try Thunderbird once to feel the efficiency and simplicity.

Off topic, but I dare say that I'm not naive. I've worked with Outlook since Outlook XP, and it's never given me any issues in regards to rendering email. I've used it in a Exchange environment and it worked flawlessly. The number of security issues in Outlook have dropped dramatically over the years as Microsoft have secured the code.

What exactly do you mean e-mail advancing with the times? Are you talking about things like webmail based e-mail or what?

There is a reason that Outlook is the de-facto standard in most businesses that run Microsoft software.
