E-tolling 'cannot be undone' - lawyer

Mr lawyer is just trying to explain a legal principle here ..

We should simply let murderes go because the death of their victims cannot be undone?
We should simply let thieves go because the money's gone and the crime can't be undone?
We should simply let corrupt officials continue with their underhanded dealings 'cos the damage is already done?

He said Gauteng motorists should pay to use the roads as it was incomprehensible to expect someone from Limpopo to pay for roads in Gauteng.

Just as incomprehensible that we in Gauteng should pay for the Navy in Simonstown.
Just as incomprehensible that we in Gauteng should pay for flood damage victims in KZN.
Just as incomprehensible that we in Gauteng contribute towards the cost when Parliament sits in Cape Town.

By his definition I should be within my rights to say **** those poor rural people, user pays principle, so let them carry water for miles I don't care I have running water in Gauteng.

This guy is either exceptionally thick .. or just being the usual hole-in-the-arse lawyer.

To my knowledge the costs were only announced the end last year.

Unterhalter said the alliance was trying to take money out of the mouths of the poor.

He said people who depend on the general fiscus are the very poor, and the alliance wanted a slice of that revenue, while the people who used the highways were well off because they could afford cars.

Assuming he is being quoted correctly, I find this argument extremely warped. People who own cars are not necessarily well-off and it is the poor that will suffer when inflation caused by the tolls drives up food prices.

If this is the calibre of argument being used by a top advocate to defend SANRAL then I reckon their case is extremely weak.

Also note the following chicanery of SANRAL's:

He said there were 132 news articles on the freeway improvement project between 2006 and this year alone .

Yet only a handful between 2006 and 2008, only one of which broaches the subject of costs, but admits it is premature to speculate on. So go fsck yourself Unterhalter...
