E-tolls will be reviewed…again

“We understand that many people have issues with the tolling policy, so we are reviewing the tolling policy – not only e-tolls, the GFIP, but tolling in general,” he said.

“We want to come up with a tolling policy that our people will actually accept. We are not closing our ears to what people are saying – we are working with the government of Gauteng and with Sanral, and at the end of the day we believe we will come with a policy on tolling that will be acceptable.”

Work with the people because you doing what you've always done - no consultation with the people.

Even if they reduce the price by 50%...

50% of 0% is still 0.

The solution is rather simple in my opinion !!...

Scape eTolls, ring fence the fuel levy, replace the Sanral board, establish new regulations that allow for vehicle testing stations to issue license discs. Give electric vehicle a 2-3 year purchase incentive which gives them a free pass on road usage levies, while the testing station updated infrastructure is being rolled out. After which, require electric cars to have their odometer audited on annual re-issue of the disc (where a road usage levy payable relative to the distance traveled since the last audit will be payable). With the new regulation requiring exist ICE vehicles to also needing to pass a yearly check-up before the license disc is re-issued after 5 years.

That solves the eToll, road maintenance back-log, electrification of vehicles and the un-road worthy vehicle problems in one go.

You're definition of simple is a touch skewed.
