I was wondering what do you think of e-wallets in South Africa? What do you think the businesses should do in order to make these wallets more appealing?

Thanks for the feedback guys i really appreciate it. From my research fnb has made about R1bn since the launch of their ewallet, however one must be an account holder to send money using their wallet. My question to you is what if there was a new wallet that was not bank specific that could be used as a "bank account" to pay for goods of services over sms or mobile website? one would make payments into their account or wallet through debit order or making a cash deposit into the companies bank account with your cell number as reference or do an internet banking transfer to their bank account with your cell number as reference. Would that be something that is appealing to you?

Easy, cut the cost to transact! Atm it costs the same amount to send 10 bucks and to send 3000.As the OP said, make universal, atm the sending party must be that bank's account holder.

Would it work via NFC (Near Field Communication) I think that seem to be the way things are going. I would definitely go for something like that.

Pocit seems to be making a very good run of it. They seem to have most of the clothing stores etc on there and the major municipalities etc. (https://www.pocit.co.za/for-me/bills-you-can-pay.html). They have an android app as well which is a lot more convenient than having to use USSD. I don't really have a need for one because I can send money to any cellphone number already with internet banking/cellphone banking(USSD) or the android app with FNB. I only have a CoJ account and I pay that on internet banking usually.
