Went to http://www.mtn.co.za/Internet/HelpCentre/Pages/SoftwareDownloads.aspx and downloaded latest firmware & MTN User Interface software.

The firmware I've managed to update after a few tries.

The User Interface software is not working, it gets to the stage where it says ready to download programs and then I get "Error Code: 16, Failed to switch the download mode."

Any ideas?

I'm doing this on XP as Win7 won't even recognise the device and I would like to update the software on the modem before plugging it back into Windows7.

Which file did you download?

MTN User Interface: UTPS21.005.11.25.697_MAC21.005.11.37.697.zip
F@stlink E220: E220Update_11[1].117.10.00.00.B268.zip

Fastlink keeps on telling me Invalid Data Card on Win7. I'm about to break things.

That's ok, the modem is from 2006. :)

Does not work. It sees the device then when it tries to update says "The wireless terminal inserted is not Dashboard, update wizrd can't work.

Looks like I'm fooked.

Is there any way I can wipe this thing and manually update it?

Aaargh fsck, googled a bit and win7 does not recognise the device as a modem so nothing you do to the modem will help. You need to 'hack' windows7.

The mofo she is working!!!

Here's the fix/hack,

http://thetechieguy.com/2010/04/19/huawei-e220-how-to-get-it-to-work-on-windows-7/
Connect the E220 – Windows 7 will only recognize a new USB Mass Storage Device and a CD drive (which btw you cannot access).
Open the Device Manager
You will see the “Universal Serial Bus controllers” Section and under that USB Mass Storage Device
Find the one that is related to the E220 (I kept the device manager open, disconnected the E220 and saw the Mass Storage disappear. I connected it again and saw it reappear – so I knew which one to play with)
Right click on the Mass Storage Device and select “Update Driver Software”
Select “Browse my Computer”
Select the “Let me pick” section at the bottom
Untick the “Show compatible devices” option
Select “(Generic USB Host Controller)” in the Manufacturer Tab (near the top of the list)
Select “USB Composite Device” in the Model Tab (on the right side)
Click on NEXT to finish installation
Windows 7 will add another USB Mass Storage Device
Disconnect and reconnect your E220 to reinitialise the E220 software
It will then pick up the E220 as a modem !

Now I need to disable the autorun crap when you connect the modem. Any ideas?

If you've flashed the 11.117 firmware correctly, you shouldn't need the hack. The hack was only needed before the Vista-compatible firmware was released.

I flashed it with the the version I downloaded above and it did not work. I then flashed it with the version you recommended in that other thread which also went fine but it still does not work. It does not see a modem device. Your mdma tools confirms it's running 11.117.10.02.00

Thanks but I cannot universally disable autorun. Removing the drive letter only works while it's plugged in a specific port, move it and the schite starts again. Is there no way to edit the contents of the file system, would love to delete those autorun files.

EDIT: It's a laptop with only 4 USB ports so I plugged the device into each port and disabled the drive letter, now you don't see it as a drive anymore.

Thanks!
