E220 modem and Ubuntu 9.10

I have set up my E220 modem in Ubuntu 9.10 and for the first couple of times it worked perfectly. Now when I plug in my E220 modem into the laptop it doesnt show in the pop down network box (top right). It shows the vodacom symbol on the desktop but nothing else happens. I have to safely remove the device and try again before it appears as an option for selection. Even then I have problems connecting to the net. When I click on connect, it indicates that I m connected but I cant connect via Firefox. I even tried pinging but that doesnt work either. It takes several (up to seven) attempts before I am really connected.

Any ideas on how I can fix the problem?

I have the E230 modem and running Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix and I have the same problem. Reading through some of the forums I have noticed that quite a few people are reporting the same problems. It seems like it might be a bug in the new version.

Edit... just to add I am on MTN, so I don't see this being a SP issue.
 
I agree with Sparky_za, I have the same issues with my E270, not sure if it is Ubuntu 9.10 related or a Huawei firmware issue, it is a bit annoying but unplugging the modem from one port and waiting for a few seconds before plugging it into the same or other USB port does the trick. I find this generally happens at boot time in Ubuntu 9.10, perhaps just waiting a little while longer before plugging the modem in after booting, would solve the problem, but patience is not usually one of my virtues.
 
I have been using both E220 E159G Huawei modems on 9.10 and works very nicely. Only problem I find sometimes with the E159 is that sometimes once the connection is made no data comes through. Disconnection and reconnecting normally sorts this out pronto.
 
You need to manually set your DNS entries. Often the E220 does not resolv the correct DNS settings with Vodacom, thats why your connected but the hamster is dead. This is an issue with even Ubuntu 9.04/7.10
 
When you connect with your 3G modem, in a console / terminal, run the following to get the DNS entries you are currently using:

cat /etc/resolv.conf


# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 41.160.128.12
nameserver 41.164.0.12
LOCAL: chrisb@trash [ 23:31:44 ][ ~ ]

You can now add in these IPs to the network manager under the "DNS Servers" section. That way you can set which DNS server to use.
