E220 not recognized in XP [SOLVED]

Hello everyone

My E220 was working fine, up till yesterday. With the modem connected to the PC, XP will not boot to the login screen. Without the modem connected, the boot goes fine. If I then connect the modem, my PC hangs.

I tried the modem on another PC (on which I used it previously) and the PC boots fine, but it does not detect the modem.

I then tried the modem on another PC (on which I have not used it previously), and the modem is detected, and the software setup starts up.

All the PCs are running XP Pro SP2 with latest updates.

I am totally lost

try updating the dashboard software on the pc that works...

on vodacom side - i would go to the vodacom site and download the 17.4 mb e220 update.

I tried it on the one machine that does not detect the modem, and the setup failed since it could not detect the modem. Seeing that the other PC hangs the moment I connect the modem, I gather I must run the update on a PC which detects the modem (like duh...)

I got everything installed and working again :)

What was troublesome, is the fact that when I connected the modem to the one PC Norton picked up a "Trojan.Dropper" trojan. Is it possible that a virus/trojan can be written to the modem? Luckily the trojan was removed, and the update was successful. :D

Good for you :)

Theoretically, it is possible that a virus/trojan could be written to the modem, but it's probably unlikely that a virus writer would target a device so specifically.

Firstly, Norton detecting something on the drive was probably a false positive, are you sure that the infected file was on your modem? Secondly, if the infected file was on your modem, there is no way that Norton would be able to remove it.

When I connected the modem, Norton popped up a message stating that "Trojan.Dropper" was detected and safely removed. I thought it must be a false positive

Hello ginggs,

I seem to have same problem. The huawei E220 just working once in my XP, and it doesn't detect my SIM card. It shows USB device not recognized after reboot my pc. I have tried another 3 PCs which the modem was not attached before, it seems the same problem.
It shows unknown device under the usb controller in the device manager.
Anything should I do to solve the problem?
Thank you in advance..

Try downloading and unpacking the drivers found here and then in device manager choose to upgrade the driver and select the newly downloaded drivers.

The device not recognized error could also be caused by a fault in the USB cable, try another cable, and if you have one of the cables with two USB type A connectors, make sure both of the connectors are plugged in.

I had exactly the same thing happen to mine... and i use a mac. I think this is MTN network related.

So while we replace our hardware - they stay quiet about what they're doing to the network.

When I got my E220 I had some problems installing it but I realized that is was conflicting with another software so I installed the modem after uninstalling the other software and it worked fine. It was conflicting with some other DVD software (Forgot what is it).

So if you have recently installed some software on your PC, uninstall it and try again coz it may simply be software conflict.

normally conflicts with Nero - that's what i found this morning with my vodafone one. it apparently has to do with the fact that it gets presented as cd-rom drive & ur dvd s/w (only Nero - my others don't detect it) tries to access it.
