E8XXX Discontinued?

Heard a rumour from a friend just now that Intel have discontinued the E8xxx lineup of processors - can anyone confirm if this is true? Why would they do that? He says that they're replacing them with Q8XXX - but keeping the E7/E5 lineup. That just doesn't make sense to me - anyone wanting a dual core processor knows that E8 series are the best, hands down. But anyway he called a few people and they confirmed to him - anyone else heard about this?
 
NEVER, afaik the E8xxx are their top range of dual core procs, so why would they dscontinue them. Unless they have release new ones. :confused:
 
Cerebus intel now have quadcores that cost as much the dual cores and are phasing them out i would imagine.
 
But Q8 vs E8...the price difference is huge. Just because it costs the same as a q6600 doesn't mean it makes more sense for everyone to get a q6600 over an e8500.
 
I tried getting an E8400 at the Midrand branches of Rectron and Axiz ..and came away with a Q8200. Rectron has declared the E8xxx EOL and Axiz didn't actually say that but they just didn't have E8xxx stock anyway.
 
well the place where I always buy my hardware told me the E8600 I ordered, they cant get it... and they completely removed the E8 from there price lists... only quads and E7
 
I see the Q8 series actually aren't more expensive than the e8s. I had the impression that they would be. Then it makes sense to go for Q8 rather than E8 if all else is equal.

The one Q8 that I see around (Q8200) is only 2.33GHz per core, and has no VT. If you match the per-core clock speed of the E8400 with the Q9650, you pay about double the price.

it is certainly foolish to make statements about product ranges based on what some suppliers stock? we have no idea what their profit motives are so we cannot extrapolate that equals the producer stopping a product line.
