Laying of the undersea fibre optic cable to connect East African countries with the rest of the world is set to commence this year.

African operators developing the Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) on Monday said plans for the cable project were on course.

"EASSy partners are pleased to announce that the project is on track and within the envisaged time scale, with the system coming into service in the second quarter of 2007," they said.

ATM it won't have too much impact though only Sentech and Telkom are consortium members. Duopoly here we come again....

It will be good news for Sentech. And if they are willing to resell bandwidth, it will be good for other ISP's as well

Correction - Vodacom SA is also on the list of investors.
And Transtel (of the SNO consortium) had shown interest - not sure what will come of that...

Bummer!

I thought Electronic Arts was putting in their own WAN to improve international Battlefield2 performance :D

Great news about Voda. Not sure how I missed that last time I looked at the shareholders. But isn't it too late for the SNO to get a piece of the action?

DimensionData is also shown as "showing interest" think the problem is the regulatory environment in SA... Hopefully the shareholders agreement this time allows more flexability ....
