Xbox 360: $218 million (an increase of $52 million over the same period last year)

PlayStation 2: $73 million (a drop of $196 million compared to the previous year)

Wii: $59 million

DS: $47 million (up by $33 million)

PSP: $21 million (down by $43 million)

PlayStation 3: $17 million

Everything there seems right except the ps3 . I never would've thought it would be below the psp :P

Please note that these figure are for a three month period leading up to September of this year. And so dont really represent anyhting.
For example if a game like Madden was realeased during this time it would def sway the look of things!

The use of game sales to justify console hardware is really very crude indeed as it does not include factors like personal preference, game popularity or hype and the fact of the cost of the game that will influence the perceived result. Tibby we are all happy for your choice but lets be factual, the PS3 is still technologically more advanced than all the others! Sony PS2/3 is like red wine, it will mature and surpass all sales over the next few years. Xbox is just like white wine, fit to be consumed quickly and forget about it. :D (Just a joke).

My point on madeen was this.
XBOX has a very strong position in USA, most of their sales come from this region, where as most of the ps3 sales come from the EU and Japan.
Now madden is an american sport, therfore it sells like hot cakes on xbox but doesnt sell at all on ps3!

@ abev

fair enough argument i guess

@NoADslYet

i cant understand how one can state that the PS3 is "the most technologically advanced system. im constantly reading comments by developers that its pretty even really.

also often read that developers prefer developing for the xbox

PS3 is still technologically more advanced than all the others!

People who actually buy games and keep EA and Activision afloat could really care less about the mythical and awesome processing power of the Cell processor and all that Sony fanboy nonsense spewed on gaming forums.

They want titles that is worth the $60 spent which are rather sadly missing from the PS3 :).

218 MILLION REASONS SUCKERS ;).

The madden argument is that the 360 is the patriotic American console for the red blooded American sport.

Unfortunately I don't think that is the case I'm afraid, looking at the multiplatform releases this week: Guitar Hero III and The Simpsons game says the exact same thing 360 outsells all others. 360:PS3 is 7:1 & 3:1 respectively.

Unfortunately lad, you're wrong. It's the lesson learned from the n64, the PS1 and the PS2. Consoles thrive on their games, not on their "potential", which means 3rd parties are critical, or we'd all be playing Atari Jaguars or 3DO's.

The importance of the sales figures is massive. Games are extremely expensive to create these days EA themselves just recorded a loss for the last quarter. The quality of their ports reflects their returns, they're not go to invest to much time in ports if they cost more than they can earn. Looking at how little 3rd parties are making off the PS3, and the Wii for that matter, can you expect them to put to much effort into those platforms?

Which brings Sony to a very dangerous situation, forgot subpar ports. If the whole PS3 platform only brought in $17million for EA, consider Microsoft paid $50million for GTAIV, not even for exclusivity, just for a bonus. You think EA will say no if MS offers them $10million to keep Mass effect exclusive? What about future IP?

The PS3 could find itself in the exact same situation as the n64 and Gamecube. Hardcore dedicated fans and some great First and second party titles, but everything else is meh.
