Thanks to the Wide Field Infrared Explorer we will soon have pictures of the space around us and the potentially dangerous objects floating around us as were taken more than a quarter century ago. The main difference between now and back then is that we will have sharper visuals, much sharper visuals. The rocket was supposed to lift off on top of a DELTA II rocket today but there were some issues with the steering system and the launch was delayed to Monday, pending a speedy resolve of the issue by hard working engineers over the weekend.
The WISE mission, which is basically very high tech comet hunter will track and scan the scan able space around us one and a half times before its coolant runs out. This will be enough though to glean some info on the objects possibly on a collision course with our blue planet and perhaps if we are very lucky some info on black holes and star hatching galaxies. WISE will thus make out part of that first line of defense against the possible extinction of life on Earth but the scientists are just too polite to put it that way in their mission statements. Global warming might well turn out to be the lesser of the evils that could befall us.You can follow the complete story surrounding WISE and the workings around it here. http://wise.ssl.berkeley.edu/
The pictures will be as close to photo real as we can get. Previous scans were not very detailed and looked like impressionist paintings according to some. This will be detailed enough to give us as close to photo real as we can currently get with the universe and our current technology. At the time of typing this there were two days and sixteen hours left to the launch.
