That's some tsunami! :p

Just got a message from a friend living in Indonesia and she says it is pandemonium and everyone is panicking. They didn't have a chance to listen out for the tsunami warning - they just all took cover for higher ground immediately and are still crapping themselves. You have to feel for these poor people - after 2004 their panic is understandable...

Post what? Footage of a 10cm tsunami? Whoooa!!!

That'd be like watching submarine racing:

Amazing that they do not even know if one has been generated but they can give eta's.

"We can't say for certain that we will be hit, or if there is even a tsunami out there.....but if there is, and if we're getting hit, then it will be at exactly 7:10pm."

I was in Penang during the 2004 Quake.

NOT FUN

Hope there is little to no damage this time round.

I was on a ferry returning to Phuket this afternoon when it hit. They locked down all the roads around the low lying areas and completely evacuated Patong. No easy feat for a beachfront the size of Camps Bay to Sea Point. They lifted the evac. warning around 8pm local (1pm GMT) and the standby evac plan was lifted at 11pm local (6pm GMT)

I must say, the Thai people and foreigners were all very cooperative and patient, esp being stranded for almost 5hrs. Some folks here say they felt the tremor, but since we were at sea we obviously felt nothing. Also fortunately no sight of odd tidal movement.

The ships and boats are all on the horison though and got out of the harbour just in case. I'm guessing they watched Forest Gump to learn that trick. :)

If you know the origin and time of the event - and you know the magnitude, you can predict the path of the wave and thus its velocity. So if there was one - it would have hit at around 7pm, considering that the pulse can travel up to 800kmh and slows down when the water depth decreases ... slowing down, but gaining size.

Voicy!!!!!!!!

Manha manha!! :)
Happy everything is oke:)

I'm assuming that everyone has heard about this one too by now?

MEXICO CITY - A strong earthquake struck a sparsely populated area in the mountains of western Mexico on Wednesday, and caused tall buildings to sway more than 200 miles away in Mexico City. People evacuated some buildings in the capital, but the city government said helicopter flights had detected no signs of damage.

Authorities in Michoacan state, where the tremor was centred, also had no immediate reports of damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a preliminary reading of 7.0 magnitude for the quake, which it said was centred 238 miles (384 kilometres) west-southwest of Mexico City and 88 miles (143 kilometres) northwest of the Pacific resort of Zihuantanejo.

A quake of that magnitude is considered a major earthquake, but this one hit about 41 miles (65.6 kilometres) below the surface and a tremor's power to cause damage is often dissipated when it is so deep.

Manuael Ortiz Rosete, the Michoacan state civil protection director, said no damage had been reported major cities and coastal communities of the state.
