I know its only supposed to go live in Aug but that's like 2 months away. Why no news about EASSy? Anyone with information about progress etc?

The official site doesn't have much up-to-date info and the press release on the front pages is dated 2008. Doesn't look like they'll bother to be involved in the community like SEACOM is.

My point. Why no mention of anything EASSy related? Shouldn't this be big news?

I would think so. I'm sure Telkom has a pretty big stake in this so I wonder if this will bring the kind of cost reductions SEACOM did...

I think WACS will have the largest impact on pricing.

I think Essay is complete already but not when it will be used...

It is hard to take EASSy seriously when their contact details don't work and their site is so shabby.

My initial impression is that I would certainly not do business with them.

EASSy and SEACOM together have less than half the bandwidth of WACS (over 5TB).

Then just to make things interesting, check this out.

All the usual suspects are equity partners in WACS.

No doubt, they'll get together in a hotel lounge in Paris (or some place far, far away) and decide how they are going to set their pricing to recover the $600M they are putting in under the sea.

I don't expect any surprises as far as costs go when WACS goes live.

Are the companies that have taken a gamble on WACS, cash rich enough to make a gross loss on every gig they sell between now when their new links are commissioned?

Remember, the "undersea" cost for Telkom, Vodacom, Neotel, MTN, and Broadband Infraco will effectively be free as they own the cable.

How can Company A rent bandwidth on a cable and think they can compete with Company B who own the cable and who's rental component is zero?

However, come 2012 when ACE arrives, there will be fun.

Been trying to buy some capacity on EASSy myself and it hasn't been too successful. Seems like they don't really want customers yet.

Becsuse it's not going tomake much difference to your life. Die wet van transvaal will still apply ;)

Information on EASSy

You can find the latest news about EASSy progress at http://wiocc.wordpress.com - the WIOCC blog. There is also more up-to-date system information on the WIOCC website at www.wiocc.net

To summarise status, the EASSy system is in the water - installation was completed on April 19th 2010 - and is currently being tested. Initial testing is complete and end-to-end system testing will start shortly. The first shareholder traffic will be on the system during July and EASSy will be open for general business from August.

Thanks for the feedback on the EASSy website. Its been recognised that it needs some work (to say the least!) and a new site will be going live shortly.

Whilst WIOCC is the sales and marketing end of EASSy, we don't yet have the marketing resources of Seacom. We've also been very careful not to over-hype the arrival of the system... but it seems that we may have underplayed it for you folks!

For any information on EASSy or WIOCC, please contact us at [email protected]

I'm particularly concerned, Grandmaster, about your experience. Please get in touch at the above address and I'll do what I can to improve your experience.

Yes... Ambo.

WIOCC has just welcomed two new shareholders - LPTIC (Libya) and TelOne (Zinmabwe) - and we're in discussions with a wide variety of African and International carriers about purchasing capacity on EASSy together with shareholders' backhaul networks - so we're very much open for business. If he's having challenges in dealing with EASSy, I'd very much like to help in sorting them out.

Ahhhh.... could this be another reason why Telkom SA were sniffing around when the "For Sale" signs went up?
