So should we be excited about an announcement on cheaper interwebz since EASSY is apparently here, and tested?

Why have we heard nothing...is it still being tested, and will it even make a difference when its turned on?

Should I not bother wondering if this new cable will help, or is it already online, and i missed it?

Work out how long it took last year when Seacom went live until we saw the first products being offered with Seacom bandwidth.

When you have done that, then come and tell us.

" too long "

The ISP now will also perform their own tests.

Once that is done, then I am sure that we will see packages using this bandwidth.

I think we will not see any packages until early next year.

Hopefully not that long. Seacom went live on 23 July last year... http://www.seacom.mu/news/news_details.asp?iID=100

Afrihost launched their R29 per Gig special on 22 September, 2009.... http://mybroadband.co.za/news/ADSL/9716.html

so that was basically two months.

EASSy went live on 16 July... so yeah... we should start seeing new products any day now! :D

Oi Gary. You always seems to have erm.. advance news lol. Care to share?

Unfortunately all my big fish have nothing to share at the moment... but my hope is we will see some providers offering R10 per Gig capped products by December! :)

On Afrihosts new relaunch site theres something about big specials happening on the 20th Sep - coinciding with their b-day (marketing yes but if it brings us <R10/Gb bw then who cares). Perhaps they are putting together an EASSy based offering?! one can only hope :)

I don't think those two were directly related. Afrihost wasn't actually using Seacom bandwidth for that R29 special, they were undercutting the rest of the market in anticipation of lower prices afaik. They also claimed that they were using their marketing budget to sell bandwidth below cost.

The first true Seacom packages might have been those DigiChilli etc uncapped accounts.

Looks as though they've been busy. They've just brought forward their upgrade due to "the rate at which we are activating capacity" http://wiocc.wordpress.com/
It says more than 25 telecommunications operators have activated capacity on the system since going live in July 2010. This must be the shareholders including MTN, Neotel, Telkom and Vodacom.
Now its up and running and "100% network reliability" it looks like a least some ISPs are using EASSY as well as Seacom.
Did anyone notice which ISPs were out during the Seacom outage today... should give us some clues?
