Eassy - Was just wondering if anyone knows whatever happened to the so-called seacom killer?
Last I heard they landed the line and then nothing.
Even when ISP's are talking about redundancy they only mention SAT3 etc Nothing about the new kid on the block.
When Seacom landed we were inundated with stuff? :wtf:

The answer will be clear once you lookup exactly who controls EASSy bandwidth in ZA.

I believe EASSy is significantly more expensive than Seacom, so very few people use them.

MTN / FNBConnect offers EASSy bandwidth @ R 12.38 / GB for bundles of 50 GB, however "they" FNB is currently experiencing throughput issues; see: http://www.speedtest.net/results.php?ria=182022266&sh=3053dcf95ef2c7f83ebf0031c50a4ffa compared to;

TRL Tech (Cybersmart) / Seacom @ R 9.50 / GB for bundles of 50 GB: http://www.speedtest.net/results.php?ria=142659560&sh=3053dcf95ef2c7f83ebf0031c50a4ffa

Both unshaped; best to stay clear of ISP's that shape bandwidth: shaped service = oversold service

More expensive bandwidth is not always more reliable, unlike what you are led to believe by articles on MyBB.

Before Seacom arrived, most ISPs had capacity on SAT3 - mostly on long-term contracts. This was very expensive and the only alternative was satellite (also expensive). When Seacom arrived, everyone bought on Seacom - often more than they needed to get the best price. SAT3 capacity owners also cut prices to stay competitive. Until this capacity runs out, most won't invest more cash in buying further resilience. Its simple business sense... at the moment there's not enough revenue in it.

EASSy wholesale pricing is not more expensive than SAT3 or Seacom - from what I've heard they are all pretty similar now.

The EASSy bandwidth in ZA argument is false - WIOCC is the largest EASSy shareholder and can sell their capacity anywhere.

EASSy announced a big upgrade a while ago, so they must be using up the capacity. It may not be filtering through to S. African home users yet. Someone on another thread suggested it may be more further north - Botswana, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania
