East coast accommodation and activity recommendations

Long story short, I decided to take the family to the east coast for a short holiday at the end of September.
Main attraction / reason is to spend a day @ uShaka Marine World while it's still a functional setup - lets leave it at that.
The rest is still undefined & unplanned.

I've been to Durban once in my life, for a day, back in 1998 if I must guess. I have no clue what I got myself and the family into. :laugh:

What areas would you recommend me looking at for accommodation?
Would prefer something on or close to the beach and self catering where I can braai and drink wine in the evening.

Let's limit it from Amanzimtoti in the south to Balito to the north, and by that I guess I indirectly acknowledge that it must be in either of those two. Closer to Durban just looks sketchy on what's available.

Ballito/Salt Rock. Close enough to uShaka for a short day trip, relatively safe and a relaxed atmosphere.

There's also a lot of activities for kids that side, and I believe the ocean is safer to swim there than in Durban.
