East Rand speedsters arrested

A motorist caught travelling at 134km/h in a 70km/h zone was one of 10 drivers arrested in Brakpan, on the East Rand, on Monday morning, said Ekurhuleni metro police.

The motorist said he was late for work, said Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

The other drivers arrested were caught travelling at speeds of between 126km/h and 110km/h on the R554 between the R23 and Afrikaner Road.

They all they said they were speeding because they were late for work.

An 18-year-old motorcyclist was caught doing 152km/h in a 60km/h zone on Main Reef road between Apex East and Rockway roads at 5.30am on Friday, said Kgasago.

Five other drivers were also arrested for speeding that day.

"Charges of reckless and negligent driving were registered against [all] the... drivers at Brakpan police station and [they] were only released after posting bail of R1000 each," he said.

They would appear in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court.

As guilty as these reckless people are, it unfortunately also shows that there is not enough policing on the roads.
People think they can get away with it because there is not enough law enforcement.
 
sometimes speed limits make no damn sense though. I cant comment on those roads but in our area there are no houses next to a road. it will be just flat with short bush on the sides with a 60km/h speed limit. I wonder when they review these things.

The 60 limit on republic road in randburg is insane.

It depends should it be an urban designated area which is then classed into zones. I think there was a debate some years ago to amend pedestrian zones to 30km/h. In the Western Cape, you have non-urban areas interchanging with urban areas, especially between our agricultural territories.

in our development/area they should rezone to 30km/h. idiots race with even payements. oneday these turds will end up in someone's living room.

Nope. Dual carriageway. The roads it links up with are also 80km/h (Jan smuts and William nicol.)

our roads would be much more pleasant to be in if actual policing was done and not just setup for money generation. but alas why mess with the status quo.
 
Speeding isn't the only source of trouble on our roads, so I wish they'd stop just focusing on this aspect.

It's the easiest revenue generation, and that's all they care about.

There are one or two houses, actually businesses now. There is a wide pedestrian walkway, and there are traffic lights where pedestrians can cross.
Jan Smuts and William Nicol are also pedestrian busy.

Nowhere near as bad as republic, where visibility around that JS bend is nil. The reason I know this is I did some stuff at a residence/business around that bend and nearly lost my life to some idiot winding around that bend while I was trying to exit the driveway.

OK, I'm talking specifically about the bit between JS and WN.
Agreed, west of JS 60 is just fine.

I figured. *** piece of road, that. Bad surface, often debris on the left lane as well.
