A policeman was killed and another injured when a group of men shot at them in Port Elizabeth on Sunday morning, Eastern Cape police said.
Two police officers patrolling on the N2 tried to pull over a white Corsa bakkie with a driver and four people in the back, spokeswoman Colonel Sibongile Soci said.
"When members attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off in the direction of Port Elizabeth.
"The police members gave chase up to Sunday's River close to a construction site next to the N2 where the members succeeded in getting the driver of the Corsa bakkie to stop the vehicle."
Soci said the occupants of the bakkie shot at the two officers, from the Kinkelbos police station.
"The 58-year-old sergeant was fatally shot in the head and the 42-year-old warrant officer was wounded in the shoulder."
She said the warrant officer was in a stable condition in hospital.
"Three persons of interest have been taken in for questioning so far, and we are hoping to make the other two arrests soon."
Soci said the names of the police officers could not be released until their relatives had been informed.
"It is very upsetting and saddening to learn that we have yet again lost another member of our SAPS family at the hands of merciless criminals," said Eastern Cape commissioner Lt-Gen Celiwe Binta.
"We will leave no stone unturned in our investigations until the perpetrators are brought to book. Our hearts are with their loved ones and close colleagues during this difficult time."
