Johannesburg - The death toll from Wednesday's head-on collision between two trains in Blaney, Eastern Cape, has risen to two, Dynamic emergency medical services said.

Spokesperson Rudy Robson confirmed that two people were killed.

"We can confirm that there were six critical injuries, part of over 20 injured in the accident. The two train companies involved are still busy with their investigation on scene."

Earlier, he said three people were trapped in the wreckage after a Shosholoza Meyl passenger train collided with a goods train between East London and King Williams Town around noon.

The first passenger was rescued just after 14:00. The rescuers then found a passenger who had died. Paramedics were rescuing the third passenger, he said at the time.
