*This is not financial advice, don't listen to me, I barely graduated from university:
An ETF is a fund that you buy into. The 'best' ETF for investment purposes are low cost index funds.
A stock index tracks multiple companies. In SA, the main one is the JSE Top 40, which tracks the 40 largest companies on the JSE.
While the Top 40 is an index, there are multiple companies which run Top 4p ETFs. You will find a Satrix Top 40, CoreShares Top 40, Sygnia Top 40 and more.
In graphics card terms, the Top 40 is the Nvidia 4600 while Satrix is Gigabyte. In grocery terms, the Top 40 is tomato sauce and Sygnia is Pick n Pay's choice.
When picking ETFs, you generally want something that is big and broad and low cost.
Cost is measured as TER, the amount of your investment which the fund manager 'eats' each year. For low cost ETFs, you are looking at 0.1% to maybe 0.5%.
Big and broad basically means don't invest in something too specific, like only technology, health care on South Africa. Big and broad indices are the S&P 500, MSCI World, S&P Global 1200 and FTSE Total World.
Start small, read a lot and ask questions.
