What is the most effective and hassle free way to block unwanted ads in the web browser. I have a PC at work, 3 at home and each running different browsers. firefox has that add block plus but I haven't tested that one yet. I found some sites which one can download a host file list from. The process of updating the host file on 4 pc's every week puts me off that one. I can manually put all the domains in my router, but that will take me years(except if I can import them which I am not aware of... Billion 7300N). Maybe there is a little program out there that can update the host file automatically or acts as a firewall? Will peerblock work for that? Even this add flashing above this new thread text box must disappear...I know it pays the bills but can I make 'em disappear?:D

Just ignore the ads. They become white noise anyway.

I'm in two minds about ads. For most sites it's the only way they stay alive. Removing ads is removing their income.

surely sites will load faster if there is no flash ads to load?

FireFox with AdblockPlus & FlashBlock FTW.

You can sign up at OpenDNS and use their proxy server to act as a content filtering system, like to filter out porn, etc.
The only reason I'm not using it, is because then you're losing out on all the local mirrors, because they then provide you with international mirrors unfortunately :(

The best HOSTS file Advert blocker is this one...

I'm not sure if that is the one you are talking about, but it comes with a batch script (a .bat file) that you use for easy installation.
(In Windows 7 you just run the batch file with administrator privileges).

It blocks ads across ALL browsers and also protects against known attack sites and malware.

It's great! I use it on all my PCs and at the office to stop the staff from getting hijacked.

You hit the nail on the head.

Sites like the one the OP is using depend on this income to survive and provide quality content to the users. If you do block ads for general browsing, remeber to exculde the websites that provide you value.
